Abstract

"This book tells the story of Italian designer and architect Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007), not just revealing the anecdotes and inspirations behind many of his most famous pieces but also detailing his encounters with some of the most iconic figures of the 20th century, such as Picasso, Hemingway and Allen Ginsberg. Perhaps best known as the founder of the Memphis Group in the 1980s, famous for its colourful and flamboyant furniture, ceramics and lighting pieces, Ettore Sottsass was one of the most important and prolific Italian designers of the 20th century and is celebrated internationally for his contribution to architecture, industrial and furniture design, ceramics, graphic design, and photography. He initially trained as an architect, before going on to become design consultant for Olivetti, where he designed the Valentine typewriter, one of his most iconic pieces"--Publisher's description.

Abstract

0Exhibition: CID Grand Hornu, Hornu, Belgium (04.10.2015-10.01.2016).

Abstract

If you've decorated on a budget, you've probably braved IKEA, where the promise of a brighter and better living space comes sealed in a cardboard box. But what do we lose when big-box retailers rule the home furnishings marketplace-and, by extension, our homes? Wouldn't it be more satisfying to surround ourselves with handcrafted pieces that perfectly suit our needs? While making your own furniture is not a requirement for a well-planned home, it is certainly possible-no matter one's budget, skill level, or space-and immensely gratifying. For Dust Free Friends, Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald of the London-based architectural firm 6a architects offer the plans for a series of small pieces of furniture that can be simply assembled with a few common tools and in even the most confined spaces. Inspired in equal parts by the utilitarian forms created on construction sites and the do-it-yourself designs of modernist furniture designer Enzo Mari, each of the sixteen chairs, stools, shelves, and other small pieces of furniture is built of affordable and lightweight plywood, which can be dressed to suit any taste. The plans are easy to follow and just as easy to modify, making the possibilities nearly endless.

Abstract

This book is considered an intrinsic part of the Belgian furniture designer's oeuvre and offers a comprehensive overview of his many creations and inspirations through photomontage, slideshows of images, and an essay by Geert Bekaert. It shows how his ascetic tables, chairs, lamps, wardrobes, and more - designed for great simplicity and with modern materials - are synonymous with the feeling of a contemporary life.
