Il est question ici du savoir des langues, question de ce que la différence des langues fait savoir des enjeux du langage : de tout ce qui se charge dans cette transaction entre culturel et politique, entre sens et pouvoir. La réflexion est menée à partir des Études anglaises avec James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, J.M. Coetzee, avec aussi la philosophie, la traductologie, les études postcoloniales et l’anthropologie, en prolongement de la question de Saussure – Comment montrer au linguiste ce qu’il fait ? –, pour comprendre ce qu’il y a à savoir par l’étude d’une langue étrangère, de ses discours et de ses poèmes, dans l’état contemporain du monde.Les transformations de la situation de l’anglais au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années sont liées aux transformations des conditions du savoir, dans la synergie entre mondialisation postcoloniale et société de la connaissance. Le Globish est l’un des symptômes de la mondialisation ; celui de la société de la connaissance est peut-être dans l’effacement de la question du langage. Parce que le langage est dans un rapport radical avec la critique, l’étude de l’anglais carrefour des enjeux contemporains est aussi une contribution à l’analyse des effets d’hégémonie, et à leur désarticulation.

En un peu plus d'un siècle, le cinéma est devenu sans conteste bien plus qu'une usine à fabriquer des rêves. Le cinéma façonne nos attitudes, nos comportements, nos manières d'être, voire d'être ensemble. Les larmes qu'il fait couler de nos yeux nous préparent aux séparations ou aux disparitions que nous craignons ou nous font nous remémorer celles que nous avons vécues. Tous nos baisers, eux, sont aujourd'hui des baisers de cinéma. Nos héros sur pellicule inspirent souvent nos gestes et nos répliques courageuses ou du moins, ceux qu'il nous plairait d'avoir. Même nos premiers Disney nous aident à prendre conscience très tôt de ce sentiment - l'empathie - si essentiel pour nous permettre de vivre au milieu d'autres qui nous ressemblent souvent parce qu'ils ont vu le même film que nous. C'est pourquoi le cinéma près de la vie est un livre de sociologie par nature et c'est aussi pourquoi il est nécessaire de rappeler que les événements relatés ici se sont vraiment déroulés et que les personnes décrites ont toutes existé, même si quelquefois ces dernières semblent avoir quelque(s) ressemblance(s) avec des personnages imaginaires qui, comme le cinéma, nous aident - ainsi que l'écrit Stanley Cavell - à préserver notre foi dans nos désirs d'un monde éclairé, face aux compromis que nous passons avec la manière dont le monde existe…

In times of rapid technological change, enthusiasts of the new often subscribe to the theory of “supersession,” the idea that newer technologies supersede or vanquish older ones. But as scholar of information Paul Duguid has observed, reality is mare interesting and complicated than that. In the 1950s, for instance, when television was becoming popular, there were widespread predictions of radio’s imminent demise. Yet here it is2015 and radio is not only very much a live but has thrown off vibrant digital doppelgängers of itself, in the form of internet radio stations and podcasts. So it goes for all of human culture: There is really no predicting where it will go next.As the articles in this collection make clear, this is especially true of writing in our time, when old and new, on-line and off-line, are mixing, mashing up and recombining so prolifically, no single theory could ever explain it all, let alone foretell its evolution. So it’s fitting that what we have in this volume is not a collection of definitive, supersession-like answers, but a multiplicity of fascinating questions explored in depth. Are microblogs a new literary genre? What happens when Japanese haiku leap across cultures? Driven by the increasing importance of discussions around "impact" and its meaning and implications for history, "The Impact of History ?" brings together established and new voices to raise relevant questions, issues and controversies for debate. The chapters are articulated around the themes of public history, the politics of history, the role of history in the shaping of learning and the situation of history in the changing world of education.
