Abstract

This book, the second of two volumes on the Gentianaceae, is devoted to aspects of biotechnology and their applications. It consists of 18 chapters and covers micropropagation by means of organogenesis or somatic embryogenesis, and single cell manipulation of various species belonging to the horticultural genera Blakstonia, Centaurium, Gentiana, Gentianalla and Swertia. Furthermore, the application of somatic cell hybridization, haploidization and genetic variation arising from tissue and organ culture for the production of plants with new horticultural traits, such as new flower colors or sizes, or with special pharmaceutical values, is treated in detail. Also discussed are molecular markers that facilitate breeding and cultivar identification, the preservation of genetic resources by cryopreservation, the postharvest physiology of cut Gentian flowers and potted plants, and different analytical methods for the evaluation of Gentians as sources of secondary metabolites, such as xanthones and flavonoids, secoiridoids and C-glucoflavonoids, and their positive impacts on human health. This volume as well as the companion book The Gentianaceae – Volume 1: Characterization and Ecology will serve as key reference works for scientists and students in the fields of botany, plant breeding, biotechnology and horticulture, as well as professional gardeners.

Abstract

Plant breeders and geneticists are under constant pressure to sustain food production by using innovative breeding strategies and introducing minor crops which are well adapted to marginal lands, provide a source of nutrition, and have abiotic and biotic stress tolerance, to feed an ever-increasing human population. The basic concept of this book is to examine the use of innovative methods augmenting traditional plant breeding towards the development of new crop varieties under different environmental conditions to achieve sustainable food production. The book consists of two volumes. This is volume 1 which comprises 21 chapters separated into four parts: Part I, Genetic Resource Utilization and Conservation; Part II, Breeding Strategies; Part III, In Vitro Culture and Transgenic Approaches; and Part IV, Molecular Breeding. Topics covered include plant domestication and germplasm utilization, conventional breeding techniques and the role of biotechnology. In addition to various biotechnological applications in plant breeding, it includes functional genomics, mutations and methods of detection, and molecular markers. In vitro techniques and their applications in plant breeding are discussed with an emphasis on embryo rescue, somatic cell hybridization and somaclonal variation. Other chapters cover haploid breeding, transgenics, cryogenics and bioinformatics. The book is a valuable resource for students, researchers, scientists, commercial producers and seed companies as well as consultants and policymakers interested in agriculture, particularly in modern breeding technologies. .

Abstract

Agricultural production has been considered as the key sector for revitalization of the economy and well being of the people in any country. For decades, due to increasing food demand together with policies encouraging production, agricultural science has focused on boosting production through the development of new technologies. Agriculture has become increasingly intensive. Farmers are becoming capable of producing higher yields using less labor and less land due to many factors, including use of fertilizer, and pesticides, introduction of farm machinery, development of hybrid and genetically modified strains and increased knowledge about farm management practices. Intensification of agriculture has not, however, been an unmixed blessing because this success has come at a high environmental cost. The damaging effects of intensification of agriculture include water, air and soil pollution, as well as the loss of wildlife, habitats and landscape features. As agricultural sustainability means maintaining productivity while protecting the natural resource base, there is increasing general recognition of the need to improve environmental performance in agriculture, through enhancing the benefits and reducing the harmful environmental effects. The book ‘Crop Production and Global Environmental Issues’ is a very timely effort in this direction. It discusses the main environmental issues and challenges which affects the crop production and productivity throughout the globe, particularly in developing countries. The book also provides some solutions to cope up with such challenges.

Abstract

This book is an overview of our current understanding of aluminium toxicity and tolerance in plants. It covers all relevant aspects from molecular and cellular biology, to genetic approaches, root biology and plant physiology. The contribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to alleviating aluminium toxicity is also discussed. Over 40% of total agricultural land resources are acidic in nature, with aluminium being the major toxicant. Plant roots are particularly susceptible to aluminium stress, but much of the complex mechanism underlying its toxicity and tolerance is unknown, and aluminium stress perception in plants remains poorly understood. The diverse facets of aluminium stress adaptation covered in this book are relevant to plant biology students at all levels, as well researchers, and it provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of plant adaptation to the changing environment.

Abstract

This work is a compiled catalogue of such findings, where several NGS technologies ranging from the genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, single cell genomics, QTL, patho-genomics and patho-transcriptomics have been applied to delineate the mystery of the associated mutations, biological pathway transitions, transcriptional fluxes and patterns of host associated or adaptations to certain climatic conditions. The aims and scope of this book focuses more on the biological underpinning to initiate the cross-talks across the traits acquired or lost during the course of evolution. The structured framework of the present volume provides the applicative point of view of the NGS technologies and demonstrates the conceptual way of linking the experimentation to the NGS technologies, to aid in researchers to place their biological hypothesis in a larger context.
