Erstmals kann die Germania Sacra eine geschlossene Geschichte einer Diözese von ihrer frühmittelalterlichen Gründung bis zur Säkularisation vorlegen. Münster erhält somit eine exzeptionelle Aufarbeitung der mehr als tausendjährigen Entwicklung in allen Facetten. Der Aufbau einer geistlichen Herrschaft sowie deren verwaltungsmäßige Durchdringung im Wechselspiel zwischen Bischof und Domkapitel sowie im Neben- und Gegeneinander zu Kaiser, Papst und benachbarten Fürsten wird hier aufgearbeitet. Damit entstand ein kaum zu unterschätzender Baustein für die Gesamtgeschichte geistlicher Territorien im Mittelalter und der Frühen Neuzeit. Gerade die Zusammenschau macht den besonderen Reiz des Handbuches aus. Der Autor, Verfasser bereits mehrerer Germania-Sacra -Bände zu geistlichen Einzelinstitutionen Münsters und damit ein ausgesprochener Glücksfall für die Abfassung eines derartigen Bandes, legt hier eine Summa vor, die ihren bleibenden Wert in der Forschungsdiskussion behaupten werden wird. Der erste Band enthält neben der Literatur und Quellenlage einen ausführlichen historischen Überblick; er geht ferner intensiv auf die Verfassungs- und Verwaltungsstrukturen ein; der zweite Band mit den Bischofsbiographien wird in Kürze folgen. Beide Bände enthalten separate Register. For the first time, Germania Sacra is able to present the complete history of a diocese from its foundation in the early Middle Ages up to its secularization. Munster is thus in the exceptional position in having the whole of a many-facetted history stretching back over a thousand years presented here. The volume presents the development of ecclesiastical rule and its administrative influence in the interplay between Bishop and Cathedral Chapter and in the relationhips and conflicts with Emperor, Pope and neighbouring princes, and thus provides an inestimable contribution to the composite history of spiritual territories in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age. This comprehensiveness forms the particular attraction of the handbook. The author has already produced a number of volumes in the Germania Sacra series dealing with individual institutions in Munster, and was thus predestined for this work, which presents a comprehensive overview which will be of lasting significance for research in the field. The first volume contains a review of the literature and sources, together with a detailed historical overview coupled with an intensive treatment of the constitutional and administrative structures; it will be followed shortly by the second volume with biographies of the bishops. Both volumes contain separate indexes.

Ce livre est accessible par plusieurs portes d’entrée : d’abord par l’itinéraire liturgique qu’il suit (Avent, Noël et Pâques) ; puis par ses chapitres sur la vie consacrée, que l’auteur traite de façon très libre et percutante ; enfin, par ses nombreuses pages sur l’accompagnement spirituel où elle voit à l’oeuvre la miséricorde de Dieu.
