Abstract

The first Polish critical edition of Georg Joachim Rheticus' Narratio Prima (First Account), the treatise on heliocentric astronomy, written in Frauenburg (Frombork), where Rheticus spent two years with Copernicus, and published in Danzig (Gdańsk), in 1540. Georg Joachim Rheticus is known in the history of science as the only disciple of Copernicus and the man, who played a vital part in publishing Copernicus' revolutionary work De revolutionibus, which was to become the foundation for modern science. In 1540 the world first heard about the heliocentric theory of Nicolaus Copernicus. Paradoxically enough, this revolution in astronomy was announced not by Copernicus himself but by Georg Joachim Rheticus, a young Lutheran mathematician of Wittenberg, who published the First Account of the Books "On the Revolutions" by Nicolaus Copernicus. His book preceded the publication of Copernicus' De revolutionibus by three years and became one of the most fascinating texts documenting the life and work of the great Polish astronomer. Rheticus wrote the Narratio prima in Lubawa where he stayed with Copernicus.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This publication presents the results of a comparative monitoring study of the integration policies and outcomes for third-country-national (TCN) women, TCN children and TCN victims of trafficking in ten EU member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Spain. The study produced findings at two levels of analysis: an in-depth assessment of how migrant integration policies and programmes meet the needs of vulnerable migrant groups, and an assessment of their integration outcomes. Drawing on the analysis of these findings, the publication provides recommendations for improving monitoring mechanisms for migrant integration at the national and EU levels and for elaborating policy approaches for better integration of vulnerable migrants.

Abstract

In new regional history, national states are not seen to play a special role. Regions are understood as evolutionary processes in which time and space-history and geography-are connected in research questions. To illustrate the entanglement of time and space in various forms and ages, this volume explores regional history from around the globe. The editor's review of the various works written under the heading of regional history serves as an introduction to this theme. This volume shows how historical events and changes have influenced the reproduction of regions in Czechia; it will also highlight how regional identities were manifested in a cultural form in romantic operas of post-Napoleonic Europe. The historically rich West Wits Line gold-mining region in the West Rand of South Africa is also examined within a regional-history framework with the broad theme of ecohealth and well-being. Through case studies, the volume also explores the history of governance and planning in New Zealand's largest city-region, Auckland, as well as the recent economic history of the State of Mato Grosso in Brazil. Finally, it also brings the idea of regional history to the most personal level of historical consciousness, by examining the experiential shaping of home in the broader meaning of Heimat, as a question of belonging somewhere - both in time and in space.

Abstract

"Maps have power--they can instruct, make life easier, mislead, or even lie. This engaging text provides the tools to read, analyze, and use any kind of map and assess its strengths and weaknesses. Requiring no advanced math skills, the book presents basic concepts of symbolization, scale, coordinate systems, and projections. It gives students a deeper understanding of the types of maps they encounter every day, from turn-by-turn driving directions to the TV weather report. Readers also learn how to use multiple maps and imagery to analyze an area or region. The book includes 168 figures, among them 22 color plates; most of the figures can be downloaded as PowerPoint slides from the companion website. Appendices contain a glossary, recommended resources, a table of commonly used projections, and more"-- Provided by publisher
