Die Wahlkapitulationen des Alten Reiches waren Dokumente, welche die Kurf|rsten als Repräsentanten des engeren deutschen Reiches formulierten und zu deren Einhaltung die gewählten Kaiser sowie ein während ihrer Regierung gewählter Nachfolger sich vor der Krönung verpflichten mussten. Seit 1619 mussten alle Staatsdiener des Reiches einen Eid auf die aktuelle Wahlkapitulation leisten. Die Wahlkapitulationen bestätigten und beinhalteten alle älteren und die seit 1519 hinzugekommenen Reichsgrundgesetze. Den Staatsrechtlern der Fr|hen Neuzeit galten die Wahlkapitulationen als Handbuch deutscher Regenten und Staatsmänner, als Quint-Essenz aller Reichsgesetze, Anker der Deutschen Freiheit, Reich-Staats-Katechismus, Enzyklopädie unserer Reichsgesetze und deutsche Magna Charta. Vor anderen Wahlkapitulationen, wie es sie in Venedig, Böhmen, Ungarn, Dänemark, Schweden, Polen und in Rom gab, zeichnete sie ihr grundgesetzlicher Charakter aus.

Louis XI est le roi de France, et plus largement le souverain d'Europe, qui a le plus fortement marqué le Moyen Âge tardif. Au point que les travaux qui lui sont consacrés sont nombreux, mais tous, ou quasiment, se concentrent sur la manière dont il a été dépeint, loué ou condamné au fil des siècles plutôt que sur le contenu de son règne, de 1461 à 1483, et sa gouvernance.Le portrait brossé ici laisse de côté les stéréotypes usés, notamment l'image un peu simple et sinistre de l'« universelle araignée », et tente de mettre en pleine lumière des pans essentiels du caractère du souverain et de sa politique : justice, religion, armée… Se découvre alors un roi omniprésent, à la fois ondoyant et intransigeant sur sa fonction, maître d'un pragmatisme érigé en doctrine, qu'il s'agisse de régler le conflit avec Charles le Téméraire ou d'apaiser ses grands vassaux et de courir après la « finance ».
