Abstract

This collection of essays reflects the desire and determination guiding many practitioners and researchers as they work together in more meaningful, relevant ways for literacy. It presents three series of dialogues in which a scholar works with a practitioner, or community leader, on a struggle toward teaching, learning, and literacy.

Abstract

"Processes of fighting unequal citizenship have historically prioritized literacy education, through which people envision universal first-class citizenship and devise practical methods for enacting this vision. In this important volume, literacy scholar Paul Feigenbaum explores how literacy education can facilitate activism in contemporary contexts in which underserved populations often remain consigned to second-class status despite official guarantees of equal citizenship. By conceiving of education as, in part, a process of understanding and grappling with adaptive and activist rhetorics, Feigenbaum explains, educators can direct people's imaginations toward activism without running up against the conceptual problems so many scholars associate with critical pedagogy. Over time, this model of education expands people's imaginations about what it means to be a good citizen, facilitates increased civic participation, and encourages collective destabilization of, rather than adaptation to, the structural inequalities of mainstream civic institutions. Feigenbaum offers detailed analyses of various locations and time periods inside, outside, and across the walls of formal education, including the Citizenship Schools and Freedom Schools rooted in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s; the Algebra Project, a current practical-literacy network; and the Imagination Federation, a South Florida-based Earth-Literacy network. Considering both the history and the future of community literacy, Collaborative Imagination offers educators a powerful mechanism for promoting activism through their teaching and scholarship, while providing practical ideas for greater civic engagement among students"--

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive overview of approaches to academic literacy instruction and their underpinning theories, as well as a synthesis of the debate on academic literacy over the past 20 years. The author argues that the main existing instructional models are inadequate to cater for diverse student populations, and proposes an inclusive practice approach which encourages institutional initiatives that make academic literacy instruction an integrated and accredited part of the curriculum. The book aims to raise awareness of existing innovative literacy pedagogies and argues for the transformation of academic literacy instruction in all universities with diverse student populations.

Abstract

In healthcare settings, the term 'mentorship' is normally used to describe the supervision of a pre-registration student by a qualified practitioner. Mentorship can be very formal or relatively informal. It can also be practised differently in particular locations, settings and healthcare professions. This clear, concise book transcends professional and geographical boundaries in order to focus on the essential characteristics of effective mentorship. It will therefore be useful to a very wide range of healthcare professionals who are involved in mentoring and assessing junior colleagues. The bo

Abstract

'Civilians into Soldiers' is an examination of body cultures in the British Army during the Second World War. Drawing on a wealth of official records and servicemen's personal testimonies, it explores the ways in which male civilians were turned into soldiers through the techniques by which they were inducted into military service. It follows the chronological experiences of wartime recruits, from their enlistment and training to their confrontations with wounding and death, and traces the significance of the body throughout.
