Abstract

This atlas systematically reviews sensory conduction studies of the median nerve, from pilot human studies in peripheral nerve conduction during the 1950s through to the most recent scientific evidence. Descriptions are provided of a wealth of sensory nerve conduction techniques that were reproduced in the laboratory, including both the originally proposed methods and variants. The methods are organized according to practical criteria for ease of reference. Attention is focused especially on those techniques which have shown higher sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of compressive mononeuropathies like carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and on the most widely accepted guidelines, recommendations, quality measures, and electrodiagnostic classifications. A detailed, well-illustrated glossary explains the more commonly used terms in electrodiagnostic medicine (EDX). The book is primarily intended for residents and professionals in Neurology, as well as rehabilitation physicians and clinical neurophysiologists. The detailed descriptions of techniques and their practical use will also make the book an invaluable tool for novices and clinical neurophysiology technicians.

Abstract

Advanced therapies and technologies, new service delivery methods, and care upgrades Advanced therapies and technologies, new service delivery methods, and care upgrades in underserved areas are translating into improved quality of life for millions with disabilities. Occupational therapy parallels this progress at the individual level, balancing short-term recovery and adaptation with long-term independence and well-being. This Second Edition of the International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions builds on its ground-breaking predecessor by modelling current clinical standards rooted in scientific evidence-based practice. Its interventions are applied to a diverse range of client disabilities, with many new or rewritten chapters on workplace and vehicle accommodations, smart home technologies, end-of-life planning, and other salient topics. New introductory chapters spotlight core competencies in the field, from assessing client needs and choosing appropriate interventions to evaluating programs and weighing priorities. And for increased educational value, interactive case studies allow readers an extra avenue for honing clinical reasoning and decision-making skills. Of particular note is a new chapter providing a taxonomy—the Occupational Therapy Intervention Framework—and a validation study of its categories and concepts, delineating the occupational therapist’s roles and the expected outcomes. Intervention areas featured in the Handbook include: Adaptive interventions, OTs manage and facilitate clients’ adaptations. Learning interventions, OTs teach and the clients learn or relearn. Enabling interventions, OTs enable clients to be meaningfully occupied. Preventing interventions, OTs prevent ill-health and promote clients’ ability to sustain health in daily life. The Second Edition of the International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions is career-affirming reading for all members of rehabilitation teams, including occupational and physical therapists and rehabilitation nurses. Students intending to enter this growing field and professionals working toward its continued improvement will find it useful and inspiring.

Abstract

This book discusses in depth the transdisciplinary integration of different components of care in colorectal surgery. Pertinent background information on the complexities of current management in colorectal surgery is first provided, followed by discussion of the role of design thinking in care integration. Subsequent chapters focus on a range of issues associated with surgical and perioperative care in patients undergoing colorectal surgery, with emphasis on how the multiple facets of care can be integrated through a transdisciplinary approach. Each chapter provides helpful take-home messages in bullet point form and numerous informative figures and tables are also included. The authors are surgeons, physicians, anesthetists, oncologists, nurses, and allied health professionals with extensive experience in the field.

Abstract

Swallowing difficulty or dysphagia is a common disorder and affects all age groups from the newborn to the elderly. Several medical conditions like lack of dentition, gastroesophageal reflux disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, cardiomegaly and strokes can cause dysphagia. It can also follow head -neck surgeries. It is important to diagnose and treat dysphagia, otherwise it can lead to malnutrition and dehydration. Improved understanding of the physiology of swallowing, advances in endoscopic and radiological techniques along with an increasing elderly population has resulted in development of a separate swallowing disorders discipline. This book would be an aid for clinicians, educators and trainees from the fields of speech language pathology, pediatrics, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, oncology, neurology, geriatrics and rehabilitation, all of who form a part of the multidisciplinary swallowing team.

Abstract

The impaired brain has often been difficult to rehabilitate owing to limited knowledge of the brain system. Recently, advanced imaging techniques such as fMRI and MEG have allowed researchers to investigate spatiotemporal dynamics in the living human brain. Consequently, knowledge in systems neuroscience is now rapidly growing. Advanced techniques have found practical application by providing new prosthetics, such as brain–machine interfaces, expanding the range of activities of persons with disabilities, or the elderly. The book’s chapters are authored by researchers from various research fields such as systems neuroscience, rehabilitation, neurology, psychology, and engineering. The book explores the latest advancements in neurorehabilitation, plasticity, and brain–machine interfaces among others, and constitutes a solid foundation for researchers who aim to contribute to the science of brain function disabilities and ultimately to the well-being of patients and the elderly worldwide.

Abstract

This book offers clear, detailed guidance on all aspects of prognostic evaluation in patients who have been diagnosed with a neurological illness or have been involved in an accident with neurological consequences. It covers the full range of disorders of central and peripheral nervous system, providing accurate prognostic estimates and addressing relevant clinical issues, differential diagnosis, and the role of imaging. The volume is practically oriented and designed for use on a daily basis when assessing prognosis and discussing the outcome with patients, their families, and other interested parties. It will support patient–doctor partnerships by ensuring professional answers to patients’ and doctors’ questions and by promoting realistic expectations of the effect of medical interventions. In addition, it will enable doctors, lawyers, and other professionals to understand relevant issues when an estimate of prognosis and life expectancy is the subject of legal dispute.

Abstract

Ours is an era of increasing tension, both global and local. And not surprisingly, PTSD is recognized not only in combat veterans and active military personnel, but also disaster and assault survivors across the demographic spectrum. As current events from mass shootings to the debate over trigger warnings keep the issue in the public eye, the disorder remains a steady concern among researchers and practitioners. Future Directions in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder presents findings and ideas with the potential to influence both our conceptualization of the condition and the techniques used to address it. A multidisciplinary panel of experts offers new analyses of risk and resilience factors, individual and group approaches to prevention, the evolving process of diagnosis, and effective treatment and delivery. Chapters on treatment allow readers to compare widely-used prolonged exposure and VR methods with innovative applications of cognitive processing therapy and interpersonal therapy. And an especially compelling contribution surveys empirically-based programs relating to what for many is the emblematic trauma of our time, the events of September 11, 2001. Included in the coverage: Predictors of vulnerability to PTSD: neurobiological and genetic risk factors. Early intervention: is prevention better than cure? The functional neuroanatomy of PTSD. The development of evidence-based treatment for PTSD. Enhancing exposure therapy using D-Cycloserine (DCS). PLUS: a case example as seen through five therapeutic perspectives. While millions experience trauma, relatively few develop chronic PTSD. Future Directions in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a practical and proactive reference for the health and clinical psychologists, sociologists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians dedicated to further decreasing those numbers.
