In this comprehensive picture of Belgian colonialism in the Congo, Lewis Gann and Peter Duignan trace the formation of the colonial state that became Zaire, considering it in the light of colonial experience in other African territories. In 1967 werd in Chastre een gedachteniskapel opgericht na het drama van Kongolo van 1962, waarbij twintig spiritijnen vermoord werden. Wat men niet kon voorzien was dat er onder de missionarissen en burgers in Congo nog zoveel meer slachtoffers zouden vallen tijdens de daaropvolgende simba-opstand (1964-1966). In het totaal werden op de buitenmuur van de kapel uiteindelijk 216 namen van slachtoffers aangebracht, waaronder alle 165 religieuze katholieke slachtoffers van de simba-opstand. 00Een toevallige bezoeker van dit memoriaal zal zich wellicht niet realiseren welke dramatische gebeurtenissen zich achter deze namenlijst hebben afgespeeld. Van daar ook de nood aan een historisch onderzoek als dit om die realiteit, hoe luguber ook, te reconstrueren. 00De grote vraag waarom de simba?s de religieuzen als opvallend doelwit wilden treffen, is niet te herleiden tot het simpele antwoord dat de religieuzen dienden te sterven omwille van hun onverbrekelijke band met het westerse koloniale systeem of omwille van hun geloof. Hoe kan men immers verklaren dat de ene simba?s hun vrienden of beschermers leken, terwijl anderen hun ergste vijanden? Of waarom in bepaalde streken en bisdommen van Congo de simba?s hun razernij uitwerkten en in andere helemaal niet? Monocausaliteit is in een historische interpretatie van feiten en gebeurtenissen meestal een foute insteek. Gebaseerd op tot op heden ongekende oen onaangeroerde bronnen en getuigenissen gaat dit boek op zoek naar antwoorden.
