The essays gathered in this volume evolved from papers that were delivered at the Second International Workshop of the project Ethio-SPaRe: Cultural Heritage of Christian Ethiopia, Salvation, Preservation and Research (2009-2015, 7th Research Framework Programme IDEAS, ERC Starting Grant 240720). The title of the workshop, which was held in Hamburg in April 2012, was “Saints in Christian Ethiopia: Literary Sources and Veneration”. It covered a wide range of approaches to historical, textual, and socioanthropological questions connected with the veneration of saints in Ethiopia from its Christianization in the 4th century CE until the present day. The papers explore the hagiographical traditions of a number of saints, both indigenous and foreign. They cast new light on known facts, offer new interpretations, and introduce previously unknown texts and witnesses.

Il testo descrive in modo analitico le malattie di sette santi - l'apostolo Paolo, Francesco d'Assisi, Giovanni di Dio, Alfonso Maria de' Liguori, Camillo de Lellis, Teresa di Lisieux e Giovanni Calabria - e del beato John Henry Newman. In alcuni casi, soprattutto per le figure più recenti, vengono illustrate le diagnosi o le descrizioni della sintomatologia, mentre per le più remote sono presentate, sulla base della documentazione rinvenuta, le più probabili ipotesi diagnostiche. Il tutto senza indulgere in alcun modo al «dolorismo» di certa tradizione agiografica, ma evidenziando come la malattia possa essere stata evento determinante per le scelte esistenziali o compagna della vicenda biografica pur senza interferire nella dimensione della santità. Il volume offre inoltre un breve profilo «patografico» di circa cinquanta tra santi, beati e venerabili per i quali sono documentate una o più patologie significative e un glossario con i nomi delle malattie e dei termini medici utilizzati.
