We live in a world of crowds and corporations, legislatures and languages, money and markets. These are all social objects - they are made, at least in part, by people and communities. But what exactly are these things? How are they made, and what is the role of people in making them? 'The Ant Trap' rewrites our understanding of the nature of the social world and the foundations of the social sciences.

Social identity theory proposes that much of our identity, attitudes, beliefs, and even our behaviors are grounded in groups that we affiliate with, or groups that are important to us. The groups (e.g. class, sports team, religion, family) which we belong to are an important source of pride, self-esteem, and identity. Additionally, the groups that we are a part of gives us a sense of social identity - a sense of belonging to the social world. This book provides and discusses new developments in social identity research.

"The development of both elite, high performance sport and mass participation, grassroots-level sport are central concerns for governments and sports governing bodies. This important new study is the first to closely examine the challenges and opportunities for sports development in the United States, a global sporting giant with a unique, market-driven sporting landscape. Presenting an innovative model of integrated sports development, the book explores the inter-relationship between elite and mass sport across history, drawing on comparative international examples from Australia to the former USSR and Eastern bloc countries. At the heart of the book is an in-depth empirical study of three (traditional and emerging) sports in the US - tennis, soccer and rugby - that offer important lessons on the development of elite sport, methods for increasing participation, and the establishment of new sports in new markets. No other book has attempted to model sports development in the United States in such depth before. Therefore this should be essential reading for all students, researchers, administrators or policy-makers with an interest in sports development, sports management, sports policy, or comparative, international sport studies"--

Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873) was the most renowned portraitist of European aristocracy of his day, expertly capturing the refinement and opulence of his distinguished sitters. Born and trained in Germany, Winterhalter settled in Paris in 1834, where he became the official court painter to King Louis-Philippe. He gained such international acclaim for his state portraits that he painted all but a few of the monarchs in Europe. In Paris in 1855, at the pinnacle of his career, he painted the noble portrait Empress Eugénie and her Ladies-in-Waiting, which would go on to symbolize an entire era. His 1865 portrait of the Austrian Empress “Sisi” is also known the world over. The lavishly illustrated publication complements Winterhalter’s magnificent portraits of crowned heads of state with selected items of clothing by the contemporary and sought-after couturier Charles Frederick Worth.

In today's context of rapid socio-political changes, with deepening ethnic and religious conflicts on the one hand, and a diminishing feeling of identification with the community on the other, reflection on the idea of "solidarity" is very much necessary. This book provides answers to the following questions: "What is the idea of solidarity today?"; "How can it be defined?"; "How has it evolved over recent decades?"; "How does it manifest itself in social life?"; "How is it reflected in the a.
