Emiel Lamberts (1941), professor emeritus of contemporary history at KU Leuven, is an international expert in the political and religious history of Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. 00His work and the central themes in his research are the starting point in 'World views and worldly wisdom'. No less than eighteen leading international researchers put different aspects of his work in the spotlight. A recurring theme, however, is the attraction and repulsion between the Roman Catholic Church and modernity in Europe between 1750 and 2000. 00The ambivalent relationship with modernity is therefore the leitmotiv of the first part of this volume, whereas the second part focuses on the repositioning of the Church and the tensions between religion, ideology and politics. In this way the volume reflects Lamberts? fascination for the history of political institutions as well as his research on Christian democracy. The contributions address ? in a comparative way and from a transatlantic viewpoint ? this broad period of time in history, which gave rise to different social movements and different models of society in Belgium and elsewhere.

Een groot deel van de Belgische jeugd heeft schoolgelopen in het katholiek onderwijs. Hoe definieert men katholiek onderwijs? Wat is een ‘katholieke school’ precies? De definitie lijkt evident: een school opgericht op privé (vrij) initiatief en vanuit een katholieke levensbeschouwing. Maar zo eenvoudig is het niet. Het boek gaan in op de verschillende vormen die het katholiek onderwijs aannam. Sinds het begin van de 19de eeuw hebben religieuze congregaties, bisdommen en schoolbesturen dergelijke scholen opgericht. Natuurlijk is het katholiek onderwijs tijdens de voorbije eeuwen duidelijk geëvolueerd. De maatschappelijke en culturele context wijzigde bijvoorbeeld onder impuls van de democratisering, de opkomst van de positieve wetenschappen, de emancipatie van de vrouw, de toenemende secularisering … Het katholiek onderwijs speelde niet louter flexibel in op die tendensen, maar heeft ze ook vaak versterkt.Het is dus niet zo simpel om greep te krijgen op de veranderende historische identiteit(en) van het katholiek onderwijs in België. Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen en SeGEC (Secrétariat général de l’enseignement catholique) vroegen een tweetalig team van 27 academici om ze in kaart te brengen. Katholiek Onderwijs in België. Identiteiten in evolutie, 19de-21ste eeuw, onder redactie van Jan De Maeyer en Paul Wynants, is het resultaat van dat collectief onderzoek. Het biedt een levendig panorama van praktijken en culturen binnen alle types katholiek onderwijs (buiten de universiteit): van kleuterschool tot hogeschool, van klassieke humaniora tot beroepsonderwijs, volwassenenonderwijs, van prestigieus internaat tot bescheiden dorpsschool.

Pugin's global influence on church architecture and material reform The year 2012 marked the bicentenary of the gothic revival architect A.W.N. Pugin. His influence as a designer not only spread fast globally, but also played a leading part in the transformation of material culture from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Pugin's work has been comprehensively reevaluated over the last decade. In this volume sixteen leading scholars from across the globe discuss Pugin's direct influence on church architecture and furnishing. Beautifully illustrated with a large selection of new photography, Gothic Revival Worldwide, the successor to the volume Gothic Revival published in 2000, reveals how Pugin's ideas played a profound role in the changing face of material reform in church architecture as an expression of the evolving identity of the churches across the world from North America to Mongolia and the South Pacific.
