Abstract

"At once a reference work and a personal exploration of modernist architecture, this ... collection of Nicolas Grospierre's photography covers structures built between 1920 and 1989 in Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. These images range from iconic buildings, such as the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis and the Ukrainian Institute of Scientific Research and Development in Kiev, to little-known structures such as the Balneological Hospital in Druskininkai, Lithuania or Oscar Niemeyer's unfinished International Fair Grounds in Tripoli. Derived from his popular blog, A Subjective Atlas of Modern Architecture, and organized by architectural form, this book reveals how modernist architecture is the embodiment of political and social ideologies, especially in public institutions such as banks, churches, libraries, and government buildings. Following the series of full-page images, an index details the location, date, architect and purpose of each building"--Publisher's website.

Abstract

This volume comprises an extremely accurate case study of Mariavall, a Benedictine abbey in Tomelilla, Sweden, wherein monk, architect and theorist Dom Hans van der Laan examines the building, unravelling the design process in a step-by-step, detailed analysis, the likes of which have never before been published. Prior to his death, Van der Laan garnered worldwide acclaim for his comprehensive architectural theory, which has been translated into several languages and presents a doctrine of connections in the design of architectonic space.

Abstract

Revised, updated, and expanded by nearly 100 projects, this new edition of the catalog for the a_show, Architekturzentrum Wien's (Az W) permanent exhibition on Austrian architecture of the 20th and 21st century, has become a stand-alone reference book. Its scope extends beyond the themes of the exhibition. Apart from condensing the current discourse on Austrian architecture of the last 150 years, it also documents relevance and singularity of the Az W collection. Featuring more than 2,300 images and plans, accompanied by explanatory texts structured chronologically as well as thematically the book points out both historical connections and contemporary tendencies. Paired with a timeline, and also offering an overview of all relevant media since 1836, brief biographies, and an index, this is the authoritative survey of modern and contemporary Austrian architecture.

Abstract

The influence and position of the ‘Generation 74’ in Flemish and international architecture. Five well-known architects who studied together in Ghent, Marie-José Van Hee, Christian Kieckens, Marc Dubois, Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem, can be considered as leading protagonists of their generation. From their education at Sint-Lucas Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts to the present day, their professional careers and legacy have been of great importance to the development of Flemish architecture. In their early works and writings, they established a distinct architectural language, rooted in historical knowledge and with a reflection to art and craftsmanship. Architecture was singled out as a spatial phenomenon with an autonomous logic grounded in inhabitation and experience. This generation represents a significant turn towards architectural autonomy in Flanders which resonated with similar international developments in the late 1970s. Moreover they played a decisive role in the emancipation and professionalization of the architectural culture in Flanders.

Abstract

In 1966, architect Robert Venturi published Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, a manifesto that became one of the twentieth century’s most important statements about architecture. Drawing on both vernacular and high-style sources, Venturi introduced new lessons from the buildings of architects who were well known, like Michelangelo and Alvar Aalto, and those whose work had then been forgotten, like Frank Furness and Edwin Lutyens. Arguing against the diagrammatic forms that dominated the field at that time, Venturi made a case instead for “the difficult whole.”

Abstract

Published in conjunction with the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), this anthology will bring together for the first time all of the projects, articles and talks by British architect Cedric Price (1934 – 2003). A chronological arrangement places Price in postwar England, illuminating how cultural, social and political factors conditioned his work from the outset and then shaped its development as his practice changed from the 1960s – 90s. Full project descriptions are set alongside illustrations, many previously unpublished. Content material is drawn from the original work, now largely held in the Cedric Price Fonds at the CCA to present the munificence of Price: thinker, philosopher, artist and unparalleled raconteur – a thoroughly modern traditionalist.
