Ein deutschsprachiger wissenschaftlicher Gesamtkommentar zu Homers Ilias ist seit dem Kommentar von Ameis-Hentze-Cauer (1868-1913) nicht mehr erschienen. In der Zwischenzeit hat die Homer-Forschung auf sämtlichen traditionellen Teilgebieten (Sprache, Realien, Struktur usw.) erhebliche Fortschritte gemacht. Darüber hinaus sind grundsätzlich bekannte Bereiche wie z.B. die Erzählforschung auf eine systematische Grundlage gestellt worden. Schließlich sind mit Mykenologie (Linear B) und Oral-poetry- sowie Troia-Forschung gänzlich neue Möglichkeiten der Texterschließung hinzugekommen.Ausgehend von der Basis des alten Ameis-Hentze-Cauer spiegelt der Kommentar den gegenwärtigen Kenntnisstand der Homer-Forschung in umfassender Breite wider. Der ‘Basler Kommentar’ zur Ilias wird von der Fachwelt als neues Grundlagenwerk weltweit stark beachtet.Ein inhaltlich und formal neuartiges Konzept kommt den Bedürfnissen unterschiedlicher Benutzergruppen entgegen. Der Kommentar zu einzelnen Versgruppen bzw. Versen gliedert sich in jeweils bis zu vier auch typographisch voneinander abgesetzte Erklärungsebenen, aufsteigend von Elementarerläuterungen zur homerischen Sprache bis zu Fragen der Struktur und der poetischen Technik. Adressaten sind Studierende und Dozenten an Universität und Schule, nicht nur der Altertumswissenschaften, sondern allgemein der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften.

Homeric Epic and its Reception, comprising twelve chapter--some previously published but revised for this collection, and others appearing here in print for the first time--offers literary interpretations of the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite. While some chapters closely study the diction, meter, style, and thematic resonance of particular passages and episodes in the Iliad and the Odyssey, others followdiverse pathways into the interpretation of the epics, including mythological allusion, intertextuality, the metrics of the Homeric hexameter, and the fundamental contrast between divinity and humanity. Also included are two chapters which focus on the work of Milman Parry and Ioannis Kakridis, founders of the two most fruitfultwentieth-century scholarly approaches to Homeric scholarship: the study of the Iliad and the Odyssey as traditional oral formulaic poetry (Parry), and the study of the poems' adaptations and transformations of traditional mythology, folktales, and poetic motifs in accordance with their distinctive themes and poetic purposes (Kakridis). The volume draws to a close with three chapters which discuss some of the most compelling poetic and critical receptions of the Iliad and the Odyssey since thelate nineteenth century, and the institutional reception of the epics in colleges and universities in the United States over the past two centuries. Written over a period of 45 years, this collection reflects the authors long-standing interest in, and scholarly and critical approaches to, theliterary interpretation of Homeric poetry.

Et si l'on avait tort de ne plus guère attacher d'importance aux Vies d'Homère qui nous ont été conservées ? Parfois contradictoires, invraisemblables, elles tiennent du roman. Certes, mais n'est-ce pas en cela, précisément, qu'elles doivent retenir l'attention ? Car un roman peut n'être pas fait seulement pour le loisir ; il peut aller plus loin que la mince ligne des faits, réels ou inventés, pour atteindre une profondeur à laquelle ne parvient pas la biographie scientifique, celle qui relève de l'Histoire. Tel est bien le cas du roman d'Homère, dont sont ici montrés la richesse et l'intérêt, du roman d'Homère qui raconte une autre histoire que celle d'un vieux poète aveugle.

Voyage dans le temps et dans l'histoire, voyage dans les profondeurs de l'imagination, le présent ouvrage entend remonter jusqu'à la source la plus lointaine de l'épopée grecque. Le voyage est aussi une invitation à une autre lecture d'Homère : le vieux poète est le plus actuel et l'un de ceux dont le chant éveille en nous l'écho le plus puissant.
