This collection demonstrates the range of approaches that some of the leading scholars of our day take to basic questions at the intersection of the natural and human worlds. The essays focus on three interlocking categories: Reason stakes a bigger territory than the enclosed yard of universal rules. Nature expands over a far larger region than an eternal category of the natural. And history refuses to be confined to claims of an unencumbered truth of how things happened.

Éprouver le corps. Au croisement des conformations sociales, des injonctions biopolitiques et des constructions biographiques individuelles, l'objet de cet ouvrage est de saisir les expériences dont le corps est le lieu, au sens d'abord le plus physique et sensible du terme. Cet éprouvé du corps est envisagé sous l'angle de « l'apprendre », d'un apprendre généralisé entendu comme la somme des processus de formation et des apprentissages de toutes natures dont le corps est à la fois l'objet et le sujet. À travers la polysémie d'un « éprouver » renvoyant aussi bien au ressenti, à la connaissance par l'expérience qu'à la mise à l'épreuve d'un moi-corps, les auteurs invitent à une approche sensible des corps. Corps angoissé des enseignants, corps contraint des élèves, corps extrême des conduites à risque, corps transformé ou assigné dans un sexe ou un genre, corps maternant, désirant, handicapé, corps de l'artiste ou du politique : le corps est appréhendé dans son espace propre et dans les espaces qu'il déploie à partir de lui.

Despite unanimous recognition in the field of neuroscience, where the name of Damasio is inextricably linked to the discovery of the somatic marker, he didn’t achieve the same success with the public of philosophers, though he loved and hated some of them in particular. These were the giants on whose shoulders he knew he had to stand, in order to look beyond the disciplinary boundaries that are always too strict for every kind of research, but even more so for the research on the mystery of the sentient and thinking body we ourselves are. Here is what I know about him, he who has the charm of a storyteller even with his unbearable faults. This and something else Damasio gives to the reader dissatisfied by the philosophical or the available psychological theories’ explanations, all the while avoiding running into the traps induced by another, no less detrimental, dualism: the neuroscientific dualism between body and brain. This is another of the -isms Damasio contributed to refute, challenging a real contemporary ‘mystique of the brain’.

Im Jahre 1998 verblüfften Andy Clark und David Chalmers die philosophische Gemeinschaft mit der so genannten These des erweiterten Geistes, die im Kern besagt, dass kognitive Systeme nicht-biologische Komponenten enthalten können und sich damit über die Grenzen biologischer Organismen hinaus erstrecken können. Die These wird seitdem nicht nur von Philosophen, sondern auch von Kognitions- und Neurowissenschaftlern intensiv und kontrovers diskutiert. In den Beiträgen, die in dem vorliegenden ersten deutschsprachigen Band zur These des erweiterten Geistes versammelt sind, werden u.a. die folgenden Fragen behandelt: Was soll es heißen, dass der Geist nicht (nur) im Kopf ist? In welchem Sinne könnte er erweitert sein, und welche Möglichkeiten der Erweiterung gibt es? Welche Zusammenhänge bestehen zwischen Geist und Kognition sowie zwischen Kopplung und Konstitution? Was genau besagt der von Clark und Chalmers vorgebrachte aktive Externalismus? Welche Bedeutung hat die These des erweiterten Geistes für repräsentationalistische und für funktionalistische Theorien des Geistes sowie für Theorien kollektiver Intentionalität und sozialer Kognition? Welche Anwendungen der These könnte es geben?
