This volume of Energy Balance and Cancer provides state-of-the-art descriptions of the rapidly evolving science of epigenetics and how it may explain mechanisms by which alterations in energy balance such as obesity and physical activity may impact cancer. In addition to chapters explaining the processes mediating epigenetic regulation, the volume contains a series of chapters explaining how environmental influences including early life events, nutrition, exercise and microbiota may induce epigenetic changes that can affect carcinogenesis. The following chapters describe epigenetic relations of energy balance to cancer in distinct organ systems including esophagus, colon, prostate and breast. Epigenetics, Energy Balance and Cancer provides a valuable resource for students, research investigators and clinicians seeking to better understand these processes as well as a basis for novel translational and transdisciplinary approaches to further elucidate these processes and develop preventive and therapeutic strategies.

This volume explores the epigenetic alterations and their association with various human cancers. Considering one of human cancer as an example, individual chapters are focused on defining the role of epigenetic regulators and underlying mechanisms in cancer growth and progression. Epigenetic alteration including DNA methylation, histone modification, nucleosome positioning and non-coding RNAs expression are involved in a complex network of regulating expression of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes and constitute an important event of the multistep process of carcinogenesis. Recent advances in the understanding of the epigenetic regulation and detailed information of these epigenetic changes in various cancers provide new avenues of advancements in diagnostics, prognostics, and therapies of this highly fatal disease.

Genome Stability: From Virus to Human Application covers the genome stability of DNA/RNA viruses, prokaryotes, single cell eukaryotes, lower multicellular eukaryotes, and mammals, with the latter including major DNA repair mechanisms, the role of chromatin in genome stability, human diseases associated with genome instability, as well as changes in genome stability in response to aging. Every species has to preserve the integrity of its genome to ensure faithful passage of genetic information to the progeny. At the same time, there are times during the life of the organism and population in general when a fine balance in genome stability and diversification has to be made to benefit the survival of the species. This book teaches the reader how various species maintain this fine balance in genome stability and genome diversification in response to their environments. The book also covers how epigenetic factors contribute to genome stability and how species pass the memory of the encounters to the progeny, thus influencing the genome of the progeny in an indirect manner.

"Epigenetics, a new field in biology, has shown that in some instances organisms can inherit characteristics acquired by their ancestors during their lifetimes, a view that was discredited during most of the twentieth century. Trofim Lysenko, a Russian agronomist long considered a charlatan, was a strong advocate of the inheritance of acquired characteristics. In the last few years a number of Russian science writers and scientists have claimed that epigenetics proves that Lysenko was right after all. This book evaluates that claim."--Provided by publisher. Lysenko became one of the most notorious figures in twentieth-century science after his genetic theories were discredited decades ago. Yet some scientists now claim that discoveries in epigenetics prove that he was right after all. Loren Graham reopens the case, to determine whether new developments in molecular biology validate Lysenko’s claims.
