The BUDA Arts centre in Kortrijk is one of the biggest workspaces in Europe dedicated to creation in the performing arts and will soon be celebrating its 10th anniversary. In the meantime, more than one thousand artists have worked in its studios and theatre venues. Workspaces, as a given (and often un-chosen) setting in which to work, have a great impact on the way the work is created and on the final result of the process. BUDA wants to work with the future vision of creation, to gather artists and people from other fields, to take position in the political debates, and remain out of the art institution.

This epistolary conversation between Noëlle Renaude and Barbara Métais-Chastanier was initially meant to be a short interview, yet it turned into a more substantial piece of work that they invented together for over a year. Moving beyond the realm of the original topics of the accident, the unexpected, and chance, it became a two-voice essay which, over the course of the dialogue, explores a writing process, linked to the enigma of the stage, in a poetic, critical, and digressive way. In daily sequences, the two correspondents freely engaged in a seesaw of questions, answers, and reflections, which finally produced, as if by accident, what Robert Cantarella calls a “Guide to Disruption” and, on this occasion, a treatise on theater.

"Historically, “queer” was the slur used against those who were perceived to be or made to feel abnormal. Beginning in the 1980s, “queer” was reappropriated and embraced as a badge of honor. While queer draws its politics and affective force from the history of non-normative, gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities, it is not equivalent to these categories, nor is it an identity. Rather, it offers a strategic undercutting of the stability of identity and of the dispensation of power that shadows the assignment of categories and taxonomies. Artists who identify their practices as queer today call forth utopian and dystopian alternatives to the ordinary, adopt outlaw stances, embrace criminality and opacity, and forge unprecedented kinships, relationships, loves, and communities. Rather than a book of queer theory for artists, this is a book of artists' queer tactics and infectious concepts. By definition, there can be no singular “queer art.” Here, in the first Documents of Contemporary Art anthology to be centered on artists' writings, numerous conversations about queer practice are brought together from diverse individual, social and cultural contexts. Together these texts describe and examine the ways in which artists have used the concept of queer as a site of political and institutional critique, as a framework to develop new families and histories, as a spur to action, and as a basis from which to declare inassimilable difference." --

Written by Ben van Berkel & Caroline Bos and published by Frame Publishers, Knowledge Matters is an exploration into a more agile form of practice - one that is scalable, relevant and opens conversations about the future of the discipline in the context of today’s knowledge sharing society. It does so by critically engaging the expanded set of demands now placed upon the profession – reframing these demands as the latent potentials of performative architecture in the 21st century. These potentials are explored, realised and speculated upon through the book’s 11 ‘Knowledge Tools’, with projects often appearing more than once and in various guises.Predicated on the belief that architecture’s inherently contextual quality provides ideal grounding through which to organise increasingly vast and accessible forms of knowledge into distinct and engaged entities, Knowledge Matters recasts architecture as the conduit through which the passive reception of knowledge is reimagined as the active production of it.
