Abstract

The book focuses on four doctrines recommended to readers as “theological images” which, given their theoretical and practical importance, turn out to be genuine patterns for Reformed Protestantism. The four theological images investigated throughout the book—the image of marriage, the image of worship, the image of God, and the image of Moses (as pointing to salvation)—were extracted from the works of Reformed theologians belonging to the French/French Swiss and the English traditions: Guillaume Farel and Jean Calvin, John Bradford and Richard Hooker respectively.

Abstract

One of the unforeseen results of the Reformation was the shattering fragmentation of the church. Protestant tribalism was and continues to be a major hindrance to any solution to Christian division and its cultural effects. In this book, influential thinker Peter Leithart critiques American denominationalism in the context of global and historic Christianity, calls for an end to Protestant tribalism, and presents a vision for the future church that transcends post-Reformation divisions. Leithart offers pastors and churches a practical agenda, backed by theological arguments, for pursuing local unity now. Unity in the church will not be a matter of drawing all churches into a single, existing denomination, says Leithart. Returning to Catholicism or Orthodoxy is not the solution. But it is possible to move toward church unity without giving up our convictions about truth. This critique and defense of Protestantism urges readers to preserve and celebrate the central truths recovered in the Reformation while working to heal the wounds of the body of Christ.

Abstract

The meaning of "reformatory theology" is often summarised by a number of "alone"--Statements: Christ alone (solus Christus) by grace alone (sola gratia) through faith alone (sola fide) on the basis of the Scripture alone (sola scriptura). But can these terms express concisely what recent (Protestant) Christianity stands for? The articles look into this question from a systematic, historical and ecumenical perspective.

Abstract

Five hundred years ago, a Catholic monk nailed a list of grievances on the door of a church in Germany and launched a revolution in the history of Christianity. But is the Protestant Reformation finished? Today there continues to be a number of unresolved issues between the Protestant and Catholic churches, and many experience this ongoing division within their family and among friends and neighbors. Written in an accessible and informative style, Gregg Allison and Chris Castaldo provide a brief and clear guide to the key points of unity and divergence between Protestants and Catholics today in both doctrine and practice. Their purpose is to encourage fruitful conversation about the key theological and sociological differences between the two largest branches of ck of book.

Abstract

"The Ten Commandments, regularly called the Decalogue, derive from the account in the book of Exodus of Moses bringing the tables of the law down from Mount Sinai. They were reaffirmed and deeply applied by Jesus, not least in his sermon on the mount. They thus became part of the Christian inheritance for the next 1,500 years, but, as this study shows, were rarely if ever prominent as a major source for teaching or morality. The Reformation saw a great change in the Decalogue's standing. Lutherans, Reformed and Anglicans alike saw it as of central importance in the lives of their congregations, and in different ways gave it that central place in their catechisms, their liturgies, and the ornamentation of their buildings. Anglicans in particular can today find the commandments continued from the Reformation in their 1662 Book of Common Prayer, in both the communion service and the catechism. In the 16th and 17th centuries they were inscribed in central place on the walls of church buildings, in many of which they remain to this day. This study brings into view the different ways in which the Decalogue impacted the very beginnings of the separate denominational lives of the various Protestant churches during the Reformation."--

Abstract

This cultural history of mainline Protestantism and American cities - most notably, New York City - focuses on wealthy, urban Episcopalians and the influential ways they used their money. Peter W. Williams argues that such Episcopalians, many of them the country's most successful industrialists and financiers, left a deep and lasting mark on American urban culture.
