Austère, sévère, intolérant, ainsi apparaît Calvin à beaucoup de ses détracteurs, qui l'accusent d'avoir brûlé Servet, transformé Genève en dictature, prédestiné la majorité des humains à l'enfer éternel. Mais d'autres célèbrent en lui un théologien génial, un maître de la langue française, le "fondateur d'une civilisation" (E. Léonard), l'un de ceux qui ont le plus contribué à l'avènement du monde moderne. En 2009, un chocolatier suisse a voulu célébrer sa naissance en créant un chocolat qui, sous une couche pralinée classique, contient en son coeur un caramel à la crème suisse pour exprimer la douceur et la tendresse de Calvin dans son action concrète. Les images de Calvin sont parfaitement contradictoires. L'homme, qui n'a jamais voulu être honoré ni considéré comme un saint, qui a voulu s'effacer totalement derrière la Parole de Dieu, dont on ne sait même pas où il a été exactement inhumé et dont on a peu de portraits, a donné naissance à de nombreux mythes. Aussi est-il nécessaire de dresser un portrait rigoureux du réformateur afin de faire la part de la légende et de comprendre à la fois ce qu'il était et pourquoi il a été compris de manières si différentes. C'est tout l'objet de ce livre.

In Calvin's Political Theology and the Public Engagement of the Church, Matthew J.
