Abstract

This book is the first comprehensive monograph dedicated to Chakali, a Southwestern Grusi language spoken by less than 3500 people in northwest Ghana. The dictionary offers a consistent description of word meaning and provides the basis for future research in the linguistic area. It is also designed to provide an inventory of correspondence with English usage in a reversal index. The concepts used in the dictionary are explained in a grammar outline, which is of interest to specialists in Gur and Grusi linguistics, as well as any language researchers working in this part of the world.

Abstract

"Ama Ata Aidoo is one of the best-known African writers today. Spanning three decades of work, the poems in this collection address themes of colonialism, independence, motherhood, and gender in intimate, personal ways alongside commentary on broader social issues. After the Ceremonies is arranged in three parts: new and uncollected poems, some of which Aidoo calls "misplaced or downright lost"; selections from Aidoo's An Angry Letter in January and Other Poems; and selections from Someone Talking to Sometime. Although Aidoo is best known for her novels Changes: A Love Story and Our Sister Killjoy, which are widely read in women's literature courses, and her plays The Dilemma of a Ghost and Anowa, which are read and performed all over the world, her prowess as a poet shines in this collection"--

Abstract

This book centers around mid-level charismatic pastors in Ghana. Karen Lauterbach analyzes pastorship as a pathway to becoming small “big men” and achieving status, wealth, and power in the country. The volume investigates both the social processes of becoming a pastor and the spiritual dimensions of how power and wealth are conceptualized, achieved, and legitimized in the particular context of Asante in Ghana. Lauterbach integrates her analysis of charismatic Christianity with a historically informed examination of social mobility—how people in subordinate positions seek to join up with power. She explores how the ideas and experiences surrounding the achievement of wealth and performance of power are shaped and re-shaped. In this way, the book historicizes current expressions of charismatic Christianity in Ghana while also bringing the role of religion and belief to bear on our understanding of wealth and power as they function more broadly in African societies. .

Abstract

‘[This book] offers ground-breaking research into political marketing and management in a developing democracy, significantly broadening our understanding of how business concepts and techniques permeate politics in different circumstances. Covering a range of topics including political HR and branding in parties, it lays important foundations for new political marketing and management research.’ —Jennifer Lees-Marshment, Professor, The University of Auckland, New Zealand ‘A pace-setting book on political marketing in Ghana that offers a strategic direction to political campaigning, financing, human resource management and leadership.’ —Joshua Yindenaba Abor, Professor and Dean, The University of Ghana Business School, University of Ghana This book focuses on the emergence of new frames of political engagement underpinned by concepts in marketing, management, and organisation. It goes beyond political electioneering and campaigning and considers business theories such as market research, segmentation, social media, brand architecture, and human resources. With contributions from a range of skilled experts, Political Marketing and Management in Ghana emphasises and provides insights on the symbols-oriented approach of political campaigning in Africa, and distinguishes this from the technology-driven process of the west. Offering a total understanding of African politics and its supply and demand interactivity between key actors, this book is of great use to academics interested in political science, communications, marketing, and business and management.

Abstract

This 2017 Article IV Consultation highlights that Ghana has shown mixed macroeconomic performance in recent years, with significant shocks being amplified by policy slippages and resulting external and domestic imbalances. Growth in 2016 was 3.5 percent, the lowest level in two decades. A recovery of growth is expected in 2017–18, owing to an increase in oil production, declining inflation, and lower imbalances with the right policy implementation. Inflation has continued to decline and the exchange rate has been broadly stable. The external position has continued to improve, supported by strong foreign investors’ participation in the domestic debt market. Over the medium term, both the fiscal deficit and the current account deficit are projected to decline gradually.

Abstract

This book explores how African countries can convert their natural resources, particularly oil and gas, into sustainable development assets. Using Ghana, one of the continent’s newest oil-producing countries, as a lens, it examines the "resource curse" faced by other producers - such as Nigeria, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea - and demonstrates how mismanagement in those countries can provide valuable lessons for new oil producers in Africa and elsewhere. Relying on a broad range of fieldwork and policymaking experience, Panford suggests practical measures for resource-rich developing countries to transform natural resources into valuable assets that can help create jobs, boost human resources, and improve living and working conditions in Ghana in particular. He suggests fiscal, legal, and environmental antidotes to resource mismanagement, which he identifies as the major obstacle to socioeconomic development in countries that have historically relied on natural resources. >.
