"La question de Dieu dans la philosophie d'Emmanuel Levinas est notablement complexe. D'une part, elle ne cesse de la traverser, d'autre part, elle s'y trouve à peine explicitée. Cette complexité se révèle surtout dans la plurivocité de la notion de 'trace' indissociable du sens que le mot 'Dieu' y acquiert. La densité tripartite de cette notion, inscrite dans le 'visage d'autrui', dans la 'passivité du sujet' et dans le 'dire prophétique', donne à penser Dieu comme absence-présence d'une transcendance radicale ; celle-ci, à même sa séparation absolue, affecte l'immanence et s'incarne comme intelligibilité première. Le catholicisme est souvent considéré comme le fer de lance du christianisme dans la persécution et la récupération du paganisme. René Girard défend une thèse opposée : le christianisme opère un retournement du paganisme lorsqu'il est violence, tout en montrant son "sens chrétien" (son vrai Dieu caché) chaque fois qu'il combat la violence. Si le catholicisme approfondit le retournement chrétien, il prolonge et sublime le paganisme par ses sacrements, ses cultes, son sacerdoce et sa vénération des Saints qui sont autant de remparts contre la violence, autant de célébrations du vrai Dieu caché.
