What does it mean to do theology and philosophy in our contemporary academia? What is the notion of good life in the 21st century university? One distinctive tradition of philosophical and theological investigation has been working since early modernity to offer answers to these questions, the Society of Jesus, founded in 1540 by Ignatius of Loyola. The engaging and original contributions in this volume examine topics such as faith, science and reason, secularism, naturalism, humanism and Ignatian spirituality. The opening text outlines the vision of Jesuit education and is followed by historical analyses of sources such as St Ignatius of Loyola and Mary Ward, to show the relevance of these methodologies for other texts and practices. The contributions explore the relationship between philosophy and theology, challenge the dominant perspectives such as naturalism and secularisation, and propose a new way of thinking. This livelydiscussion engages with contemporary issues in the sphere of interreligious dialogue, bioethics, citizenship and human rights.

The Italian Jesuit Ippolito Desideri was one of the most remarkable of the many remarkable Jesuits who made the perilous journey to Buddhist lands. The present volume provides an introduction to his encounter with Buddhist philosophy, describing his efforts to save the souls of the people of Tibet. In 1721, as he waited in Tibet for a letter from Rome that would grant him papal permission to remain in Tibet and carry out his mission to convert its people to the true faith, he continued writing what he considered his magnum opus, a massive treatise, written in excellent classical Tibetan, complete with citations from Buddhist texts, to prove the errors of Buddhism. This book is a study of Desideri's unfinished masterpiece. It includes extended excerpts from Desideri's Inquiry concerning the Doctrines of Previous Lives and Emptiness, translated into a European language for the first time here. It also contains a detailed commentary, discussing Desideri's deft use of Buddhist terms and tropes to make his case. In addition, the volume includes a full translation and study of Desideri's Essence of the Christian Religion. Here, he offers his refutation of the doctrine of emptiness before going on to set forth the tenets of the Roman Catholic faith in the vocabulary of Tibetan Buddhism.--

In A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism , Robert A. Maryks provides thirteen unique essays discussing the Jesuit mystical tradition, a somewhat neglected aspect of Jesuit historiography that stretches as far back as the order’s co-founder, Ignatius of Loyola, his spiritual visions at Manresa, and ultimately the mystical perspective contained in his Spiritual Exercises . The volume’s contributions on the most significant representatives of the Jesuit mystical tradition—from Baltasar Álvarez to Louis Lallemant to Hugo Makibi Enomiya-Lassalle—aim to fill this lacuna in Jesuit historiography. Although intended primarily as a handbook for scholars seeking to further their own research in this area, the volume will undoubtedly be of interest to scholars and students of Jesuit studies more broadly.

This book is the first volume of a projected 3-volume edition which aims to contribute to our understanding of Robert Persons's significance as a controversial figure in early modern European history. It includes documents and letters by Persons, as well as letters to Persons, notably from the superior general of the Society of Jesus, Claudio Acquaviva. All letters have been collated with the extant manuscript witnesses. The introduction comprises Persons's biography, relevant aspects of early Jesuit history and the Jesuit mission to England, and overviews of the papacy and the political situation in England and Scotland, France, the Netherlands and Spain, for the period covered by the letters in this volume.
