"2016 marked the dawn of the post-truth era. The year saw two shock election results, each of which has the potential to reshape the world: the UK's decision to leave the EU, and the elevation of Donald Trump to the office of US President. The campaigns highlighted many of the same issues in their home countries: social division, anger at the elite, anti-immigration sentiment and more - but, more than anything, they heralded an unprecedented rise of bullshit. Sophistry and spin have been part of politics since the dawn of time. But the modern era sees millions being fed false reports that Hillary Clinton ordered 30,000 guillotines to use on her opponents following her victory, while Trump claims he 'never said that' about speeches recorded on video, and the Leave campaign's divisive claims about GBP350 million extra funding for the NHS and 'swarms' of new EU immigrants from Turkey prove pivotal in a referendum. Post-truth is bigger than fake news and bigger than social media. It's about the slow rise of a political, media and online infrastructure that has devalued truth. Bullshit gets you noticed. Bullshit makes you rich. Bullshit can even pave your way to the Oval Office. This is the story of bullshit: what's being spread, who's spreading it, why it works - and what we can do to tackle it."

The first book to offer a rigorous, sophisticated analysis of ISIS's rhetoric and why it is so persuasive ISIS wages war not only on the battlefield but also online and in the media. Through a close examination of the words and images ISIS uses, with particular attention to the "digital caliphate" on the web, Philippe-Joseph Salazar theorizes an aesthetic of ISIS and its self-presentation. As a philosopher and historian of ideas, well versed in both the Western and the Islamic traditions, Salazar posits an interpretation of Islam that places speech-the profession of faith-at the center of devotion and argues that evocation of the simple yet profound utterance of faith is what gives power to the rhetoric that ISIS and others employ. At the same time, Salazar contends that Western discourse has undergone a "rhetorical disarmament." To win the fight against ISIS and Islamic extremism, Western democracies, their media, politicians, and counterterrorism agencies must consider radically changing their approach to Islamic extremism.

The certainty that the civil war in El Salvador would not be defined exclusively in military terms, but in the capacity of each one of the actors to conquer the consciences of the Salvadorans and win for themselves the international public opinion, was an element shared by the FMLN, the American advisers and, to a lesser extent, the High Command of the Armed Forces. Under this conception, the confrontation between the revolutionary movement and the government forces was expressed in the political and military sphere, but also in the cultural field and in the field of communication and propaganda. War by other means addresses this other dimension of armed confrontation, analyzing the dissemination strategies and communicative projects promoted by Salvadoran guerrilla organizations, from their emergence in the early seventies, to the signing of the 1992 Peace Accords. This book highlights the need to incorporate the communicative dimension to the study of Latin American insurgent experiences. In this sense, the author proposes a specific analysis model that allows the insertion of communication policies within the framework of the general mobilization strategy of revolutionary organizations.
