Abstract

Foreign banks can play an important role in facilitating international trade. Most research has focused on the financing role banks can play, but less is known about the information role. This paper estimates a gravity model using sub-regional data from Turkey between 2002 and 2010 to explore whether foreign banks promote trade through the information channel. The presence of a foreign banks from a trade partner promote the exports of the sub-region. In addition, the analysis finds that the footprint of these foreign banks matters more for exports than the presence of these banks and the level of financial development of the sub-region. Banks from countries neighboring trade partners can also decrease exports. When taking into account financial conditions and examining the differential impacts during the recent financial crisis, the analysis finds that the footprint of foreign banks has the largest impact on trade.

Abstract

The Netherlands today is prosperous, but its future success is not assured.  The Netherlands owes its success in no small part to actions it has taken in the past to develop a highly skilled population. Given the profound economic and social transformation that the Netherlands is currently undergoing, skills will be even more important for success in the future.  The Dutch education system and the skills of the Dutch population are strong overall. Therefore many of the opportunities for further improving the skills outcomes of the Netherlands are to be found in areas of society where the government has more limited influence, such as the workplace and community. As a consequence, achieving the Netherlands' skills ambitions will require a whole-of-society approach. The OECD Skills Strategy Diagnostic Report: Netherlands identifies the following three skills priorities for the Netherlands - fostering more equitable skills outcomes, creating skills-intensive workplaces, and promoting a learning culture. These priorities were identified through the analysis of common themes that emerged from stakeholder perspectives on the most important skills challenges facing the Netherlands, and through the OECD's analysis of the nine skills challenges identified and examined in the report.

Abstract

In Asia today, the grand ideologies of the past have lost their power over the popular imagination. Even in many of the region’s democracies, popular engagement in the political process faces profound challenges. Yet amidst this landscape of political disenchantment, groups of ordinary people across Asia are finding new ways to take control of their own lives, respond to threats to their physical and cultural survival, and build better futures. This collection of essays by prominent scholars and activists traces the rise of a quiet politics of survival from the villages of China to Japan’s Minamata and Fukushima, and from the street art of Seoul and Hong Kong to the illegal markets of North Korea. Introducing an innovative conceptual framework, New Worlds from Below shows how informal grassroots politics in Northeast Asia is generating new ideas and practices that have region-wide and global relevance.

Abstract

Cities and regions represent the driving force of development in economic, social, and cultural life and reflect the spatial organization of human society. Furthermore, strategic urban regions are becoming increasingly important players in the global economy, as the impact of national states decreases while the impact of cities and urban regions is increasing. The process of globalization is reflected in the tendency for gaining competitiveness and efficiencies of global trends. Once cities and regions have identified where they are, they need to decide where they want to be in the future. And to do this, they need to understand the significant trends that will influence the direction in which the future unfolds. Managing the identified capitals (four of them are subject of the sections in this book) effectively means taking a holistic approach, since each of the capitals depends on the others. The necessity of taking a holistic approach is one of the themes to emerge particularly strongly from the knowledge-based economy.

Abstract

As austerity measures continue, accompanied by ongoing cuts in government services, the importance of community groups to social welfare and well-being becomes ever greater. This text offers a wide range of perspectives on the role and nature of those groups, specifically those that are operating outside the formal voluntary sector in the United Kingdom. These groups, which are unregulated, need more rigorous analysis than in the past as their role and scope continue to increase; this work represents a major step towards better understanding of how they work and what they do.

Abstract

Prepared by the Urban Drainage Standards Committee of the Standards Development Council of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers Standards ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 62-16, 63-16, and 64-16 establish guidelines for the design, installation, and operation and maintenance of stormwater impoundments. Gathered into a single volume, these new standards focus on local and regional impoundments that manage, treat, and attenuate stormwater runoff, thus reducing the impact of stormwater on downstream areas. ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 62-16 provides guidance for design and covers such topics as types of systems, regulations and permits, design requirements, safety, inflow hydrology, hydraulic design, routing, and water quality. ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 63-16 presents guidelines for the installation and discusses subjects such as contract documents, site investigation, installation, and inspection. ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 64-16 focuses on operation and maintenance of stormwater impoundments, including O&M plans, water quality, periodic inspection, and maintenance. Standard Guidelines for the Design, Installation, and Operation and Maintenance of Stormwater Impoundments is the most up-to-date reference on the impoundment and naturally occurring treatment of stormwater. The three standards are useful in applications such as airports, roads, and other transportation systems, as well as industrial, residential, and recreational areas. Incidental surface water is considered, but the standards do not address broader issues associated with larger-scale flood control impoundments and reservoirs, which have unique and multipurpose aspects. Engineers, planners, and owners considering stormwater impoundment solutions will find these new standards to be a valuable resource.
