Abstract

This book offers a broad overview of the concepts and research findings in immunometabolism. The immune system is made up of numerous different cell types, pathways, and components that must be able to respond rapidly to a pathogen or cancer, but must also remain quiescent in the absence of challenges. Immune cells rely on metabolic pathways to adapt to changing environments and stimuli. Additionally, these cells can be modified in function or fate by fluctuations in available nutrients. The chapters in this book describe ways in which immune cells utilize and are regulated by metabolic pathways. Topics include how immune-cell metabolism shapes immune homeostasis, and how dysregulation of these pathways can lead to immune disorders. In different contexts, such as a tumor microenvironment, immune-cell function and identity may be modified not only by cytokines and checkpoint molecules, but also by nutrient availability and other metabolic stimuli. Transcriptional reprogramming confers many of the changes in immune cell metabolism that are seen when a T-cell, for example, undergoes activation or functional adaptation to different environments. Lastly, immune cells can destructively or protectively participate in human metabolic homeostasis or disorders. This book summarizes immune-metabolism from a variety of different perspectives, including the ways in which metabolic cues, pathways, and requirements of immune cells change in conditions of homeostasis and activation. The exploration of the significance of metabolic checkpoints and other cues, particularly in the context of cancer and immune disorders, may form the foundation for the development of therapeutics.

Abstract

Weather control. Juxtaposing those two words is enough to raise eyebrows in a world where even the best weather models still fail to nail every forecast, and when the effects of climate change on sea level height, seasonal averages of weather phenomena, and biological behavior are being watched with interest by all, regardless of political or scientific persuasion. But between the late nineteenth century-when the United States first funded an attempt to "shock" rain out of clouds-and the late 1940s, rainmaking (as it had been known) became weather control. And then things got out of control. In Make It Rain, Kristine C. Harper tells the long and somewhat ludicrous history of state-funded attempts to manage, manipulate, and deploy the weather in America. Harper shows that governments from the federal to the local became helplessly captivated by the idea that weather control could promote agriculture, health, industrial output, and economic growth at home, or even be used as a military weapon and diplomatic tool abroad. Clear fog for landing aircraft? There's a project for that. Gentle rain for strawberries? Let's do it! Enhanced snowpacks for hydroelectric utilities? Check. The heyday of these weather control programs came during the Cold War, as the atmosphere came to be seen as something to be defended, weaponized, and manipulated. Yet Harper demonstrates that today there are clear implications for our attempts to solve the problems of climate change.

Abstract

Maximizing student capacity and restoring motivation-the key to school success Brain research has the power to revolutionize education, but it can be difficult for educators to implement innovative strategies without the proper knowledge or resources. The Education Revolution bridges the gap between neuroscience, psychology, and educational practice. It delivers what educators need: concrete applications of the most current and relevant research that they can use in their classrooms and schools. Readers will find • Teaching strategies based on the latest brain research, designed to advance academic performance • Scientifically sound, solution-focused practices to address the root of negative behaviors • Approaches to counteract the negative impact of technology on the brain • Concrete methods to improve school climate • Model lessons for teachers that demonstrate how to implement the given strategies Written by Horacio Sanchez, a leading authority on child and adolescent behavior and resiliency, this book shows educators how they can use our growing understanding of brain science to restore students' desire to learn; improve achievement, behavior and school climate; and revolutionize education. "Sanchez combines expertise in education, psychology, and neuroscience with extensive teaching experience and extraordinary insight into what makes us all behave the way we do." Dr. David L. Katz, President, American College of Lifestyle Medicine Director, Yale University Prevention Research Center "The Education Revolution focuses on the whole child through both academic and social aspects of learning. I feel confident that I can trust this research and use these ideas in my teaching." Kendra Hanzlik, Instructional Coach Prairie Hill Elementary School, College Community School District.

Abstract

This book discusses recent research in innate immunity, which has revealed a large number of receptors that sense the presence of microorganisms or cellular damage in tissues. In complex tissues, many of these sensing events occur simultaneously. Thus, the downstream signaling pathways need to be integrated so that an appropriate cellular inflammatory response can be initiated. In addition, the inflammasome defines the molecular and cellular processes of inflammation in response to microbial infection. Previous data suggested that regulation of inflammasomes is mediated by microbes, but inflammasomes also have antimicrobial functions. Increasing evidence in mouse models, together with human data, strongly implicates an involvement of the inflammasome and uncontrolled inflammation in the initiation and progression of diseases with a high impact on public health.  The book reviews novel aspects of functional genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, post-translat ional modifications, microbiome and immunometabolism in order to understand inflammatory signaling and responses, covering recent findings on the mechanisms underlying the regulation of inflammatory responses to pathogens, dysregulation of these responses in inflammatory disease, and the use of such mechanisms to boost or subdue the inflammatory response. Bridging the gaps in understanding between the fields of human and mouse immunology, it provides valuable insights into inflammatory-mediated disease and immune defense. Such innovative perspectives in both basic and clinical research promote the translation of knowledge to the clinic.

Abstract

This is the second edition of a very well received book that details how the sumoylation system functions and how it modulates numerous cellular activities. SUMO is a post-translational modifier in the ubiquitin super-family that has gained recognition over the last twenty years as an essential and prevalent regulatory molecule. Individual chapters explore the biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology of the sumoylation system and its substrate proteins. The book is divided into three themed parts: Molecular Functions (I), Cell Growth Regulation (II), and Diseases (III). Parts I and II focus on the contribution of sumoylation to cellular activities in both the nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments. The nuclear activities covered include nucleic acid metabolism (both RNA and DNA), chromosome structure and replication, and nucleocytoplasmic transport. Cytoplasmic processes presented include regulation of membrane ion channels, general metabolism, and apoptotic signalling. Topics in Part III include the role of sumoylation in developmental abnormalities (craniofacial and cardiovascular), diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and infections with viruses and bacteria. Each of the corresponding chapter authors is an active researcher who has made significant contributions to understanding sumoylation. This second edition provides updates and revisions to most of the original chapters plus adds six new chapters to address important developing areas of sumoylation research. This volume is intended for a scientific audience from undergraduates to independent researchers. The content will serve as both a solid introduction for the novice reader and an in depth treatment for the advanced scholar.

Abstract

Prepared by the Atmospheric Water Management Standards Committee of the Standards Development Council of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers Standard Practice for the Design, Conduct, and Evaluation of Operational Precipitation Enhancement Projects describes the application of cloud seeding technologies to facilitate the conversion of atmospheric water vapor into precipitation. By using a variety of meteorological and hydrological observations, water resources engineers can design, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of precipitation enhancement methods. Standard ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 42-17 provides an introduction to the history and technology of cloud seeding and describes the scientific basis for examining the efficiency of both natural precipitation and human-induced weather modifications. This standard covers design aspects of precipitation enhancement projects, including project scope, seeding agents, targeting and delivery methods, meteorological data, deployment of equipment, legal issues, and environmental concerns. Operational issues such as manuals, personnel requirements, decision-making hierarchy, communications, safety, and public relations, are considered. Finally, the components of project evaluation, including project design constraints, evaluation measures, and dissemination of results, are surveyed. This standard updates the previous version, ASCE/EWRI 42-04, to reflect the latest science, engineering, and technological advancements since 2005. All sections have been streamlined and revised to better align with project operations. The standard has been reorganized to present mandatory provisions and nonmandatory commentary. The coverage of warm cloud seeding has been improved throughout. The discussion of project scope emphasizes the importance of defining it as completely and realistically as possible. Engineers and government regulators involved in water resources management and weather modification will turn to this standard for the most current guidance on cloud seeding technologies, thus saving time, money, and more.
