Uli Sigg (1946), Zwitsers zakenman, diplomaat en kunstverzamelaar, bezit op dit moment de grootste particuliere collectieve hedendaagse Chinese kunst in de wereld. De collectie van Uli Sigg bestaat uit ongeveer 2500 werken van meer dan 400 kunstenaars. In 'A Chinese journey: The Sigg Collection', catalogus bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Noordbrabants Museum, worden 55 werken van 30 kunstenaars getoond uit de periode 2005-heden. De werken worden opgedeeld in drie thema's: traditie, spiritualiteit en de sociaal-politieke realiteit. In de afgelopen twaalf jaar heeft de Chinese kunst een nieuwe ontwikkeling doorgemaakt waarbij kunstenaars terugkeerden naar traditionele technieken en thema's als kalligrafie en spiritualiteit. Dit leidde tot indrukwekkende schilderijen, installaties en sculpturen die verrassen door hun lichtheid en schoonheid. De afgelopen decennia was Uli Sigg nauw betrokken bij het creatieve proces van kunstenaars zoals Ai Weiwei en Feng Mengbo. Verschillende van deze werken komen voor in 'A Chinese journey'. This publication poses the question of Nauman's contemporaneity and situates his oeuvre in the context of artistic positions and art theoretical discourses from the last decades. Six in-depth essays illuminate Nauman's work, such as in regard to its inherent humour or the practice of endless repetition. The volume of texts examines the mirror image and rear-view figures, for example, along with questions of contemporary subject constitution, digital image production and cybernetics. Theories of labour and globalisation are discussed in reference to Nauman's creative output, as well as the connections between Nauman's work and models of behaviourism, software and computer theory, or topology. The essays consider Nauman's oeuvre in relation to diverse artistic positions such as those of Ed Atkins, Erwin Wurm, Francis Alÿs, Fischli / Weiss, Dara Birnbaum, Yvonne Rainer or René Magritte. In so doing, it seeks to counter the tendency to cast the artist as an outstanding solitary figure of postmodernism and opens up manifold references.
