Abstract

"What is the place of architecture in the history of art? Why has it been at times central to the discipline, and at other times seemingly so marginal? What is its place now? Many disciplines have a stake in the history of architecture - sociology, anthropology, human geography, to name a few. This book deals with perhaps the most influential tradition of all - art history - examining how the relation between the disciplines of art history and architectural history has waxed and waned over the last one hundred and fifty years. In this highly original study, Mark Crinson and Richard J. Williams point to a decline in the importance attributed to the role of architecture in art history over the last century - which has happened without crisis or self-reflection. The book explores the problem in relation to key art historical approaches, from formalism, to feminism, to the social history of art, and in key institutions from the Museum of Modern Art, to the journal October. Among the key thinkers explored are Banham, Baxandall, Giedion, Panofsky, Pevsner, Pollock, Riegl, Rowe, Steinberg, Wittkower and Wölfflin. The book will provoke debate on the historiography and present state of the discipline of art history, and it makes a powerful case for the reconsideration of architecture."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Abstract

This book describes the huge efforts by the Chinese Government concerning the restoration and future sustainable management of Chinese water systems. It presents the results of a Sino-European joint project concerning the Songhuajiang-Liaohe River-Basin (SLRB) in Northeast China conducted by the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ, Germany, and the Natural Environment Research Council as represented by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), UK. The book explains in great detail the development of risk assessment and corresponding management methods for (i) controlling water pollution, (ii) assessing river health and ecological restoration options, (iii) characterizing persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and (iv) protecting fragile groundwater resources. It also describes the implemented demonstration sites of SLRB during the project course as well as lessons learnt on efficient project management and the dissemination of knowledge and technologies.

Abstract

Researching dance and movement offers unique opportunities to understand the world as lived and the relationships between people in unique sociocultural contexts. Framed within various philosophical perspectives and within a qualitative research paradigm, embodied, lived dance experiences provide knowledge and understanding. Relevant methodologies that engage in research on movement are discussed, with specific focus on dance research. Identifying key perspectives for dance research from anthropology and ethnography, phenomenology, feminist research and creative practice as research, points to methodologies and methods that align with these perspectives. Drawing on qualitative perspectives and methodologies, specific methods discussed include participant observation, field notes, interviews, collective discussions and focus groups, phenomenological description (using bracketing and variation), and experiential methods (somatic inquiry and improvisation). Also discussed is dance research and 21st-century feminist perspectives, particularly the feminist method of in-depth interviewing. The entry also outlines issues facing the dancing researcher in terms of reflexivity, intersubjectivity, and ethical research design. Furthermore, how unique methodologies and creative methods that have arisen from dancer's embodied ways of knowing serve to expand knowledge is considered. Specific methods discussed from the methodology of creative practice as research are dance making, creative journaling, and dancing the research.
