In der neueren Systemtheorie, die untrennbar mit dem Soziologen Niklas Luhmann verbunden ist, nimmt der Begriff der binären Codierung einen zentralen Stellenwert ein. Er beschreibt eine Struktur, die in allen gesellschaftlichen Funktionssystemen in je wechselnden Formen beobachtbar ist. Die Wichtigkeit dieser Begrifflichkeit wird aktuell besonders im Reflexionsbereich des Medizinsystems gesehen und problematisiert. Luhmann selbst hat diesem System zwar keine größere Aufmerksamkeit zukommen lassen, er deutet aber eine irritierende Vertauschung der beiden Werte der binären Codierung krank/gesund an, die das ›System der Krankenbehandlung‹ (Luhmann) in eine strukturelle Schieflage geraten lässt. Das zeigt sich auch in der dichotom verlaufenden Folgerezeption: einerseits gibt es Ansätze, die Luhmanns Version der Codierung akzeptieren, und andererseits Vorschläge, in erster Linie aus den Gesundheitswissenschaften, die sie zu kurieren versuchen. Das vorliegende Buch geht erstens dem Begriff der binären Codierung im Werk Luhmanns in seiner Entstehung nach, rekonstruiert ihn und überprüft ihn an ausgewählten Funktionssystemen. Zweitens werden die Ergebnisse für eine differenzierte Auseinandersetzung mit der von Luhmann konstatierten Verkehrung der binären Codierung im System der Krankenbehandlung fruchtbar gemacht. Dabei werden der Funktionsbegriff sowie das von Luhmann hervorgehobene Reflexionsdefizit kritisiert und in einen Zusammenhang gebracht mit Inkonsistenzen, die sich aus einem simplifizierenden Umgang mit der binären Codierung dieses Systems ergeben. Die Analyse verdeutlicht, dass der binären Codierung im System der Krankenbehandlung mit dem Instrumentarium der Systemtheorie allein nicht beizukommen ist. Der Autor schlägt deshalb vor, ihre Aufklärung um eine logische Begriffsphilosophie zu ergänzen, die sich selbst als platonische Dialektik ausweist.

This collection brings together new critical approaches to diaspora studies, branching out to areas such as literary studies, visual culture, and museum studies, and explores them in relation to a variety of fictional works, cultural traditions, theoretical paradigms, and geo-political contexts.
