Abstract

After World War II, West Germans and West Berliners found ways of communicating both their recent sufferings and aspirations for stable communities through buildings that fused the ruins of historicist structures with new constructions rooted in the modernism of the 1910s and 201820s. As Modernism as Memory illustrates, these postwar practices undergird the approaches later taken in influential structures created or renovated in Berlin following the fall of the Wall, including the Jewish Museum and the Reichstag, the New Museum and the Topography of Terror. While others have characterized contemporary Berlins museums and memorials as postmodern, Kathleen James-Chakraborty argues that these environments are examples of an architecture of modern memorythat is much older, more complex, and historically contingent. She reveals that churches and museums repaired and designed before 1989 in Dfcren, Hanover, Munich, Neviges, Pforzheim, Stuttgart, and Weil am Rhein contributed to a modernist precedent for the relationship between German identity and the past developed since then in the Ruhr region and in Berlin. Modernism as Memory demonstrates that how one remembers can be detached from what one remembers, contrasting ruins with recollections of modernism to commemorate German suffering, the Holocaust, and the industrial revolution, as well as new spaces for Islam in the country.

Abstract

Klarenstraat in Amsterdam.

Abstract

"Fourteen case studies address the challenges of conserving the twentieth century's most ubiquitous building material—concrete. Following a meeting of international heritage conservation professionals in 2013, the need for recent, thorough, and well-vetted case studies on conserving twentieth century heritage became clear. This book answers that need and kicks off a new series, Conserving Modern Heritage, aimed at sharing best practices. The projects selected represent a range of building typologies, uses, and sizes, from the high-rise housing blocks of Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation and public buildings such as London's National Theatre to small monuments like the structures at Dudley Zoological Gardens and a sculpture by Donald Judd. They also represent a range of environmental and economic contexts. Some projects benefit from high levels of heritage protection and access to funding, while others have had to negotiate conservation with stringent cost limitations. All follow a rigorous conservation approach, beginning with a process of investigation and diagnosis to identify causes and target repairs, balanced with conservation requirements to preserve significance."

Abstract

Abstract

The book is a compendium of homes, including apartments and single-family houses, that have been remodeled to suit contemporary lifestyle needs. Rehabilitations of living spaces are often done to reanimate existing constructions that, over time, have become impractical, if not obsolete. The challenge is to adapt these existing buildings to contemporary standards while maintaining what might still be useful or what we like about them. Most old buildings are very compartmentalized, reflecting the human habits of their time and the available building technology. Nowadays, we like to live in much more open and airy spaces--and new building methods allow for the removal of walls that ultimately free up space. We renovate and upgrade living spaces to various degrees, ranging anywhere from upgrading fixtures and appliances to removing and reconstructing walls and expanding buildings. While extensive work is sometimes required, these rehabilitations can result in stunning transformations. Many add comfort and increase utility, not to mention that the investment generally adds value to the property. This inspirational book showcases a range of rehabilitated projects, from ones that begin by totally stripping out interiors to a clean slate, to less extensive work that might be limited to cosmetic changes or simple finish and fixture upgrades. Existing dwellings have proved themselves flexible to changing necessities, and they are key to the regeneration of our living environment.

Abstract

This book documents the most recent realizations of urban factory facilities in Flanders designed by the upcoming architecture studio TRANS. In Flanders three recently built factory facilities showcase the potential of bringing manufacturing back to the city. Nina Rappaport (Yale University) and Job Floris (Monadnock architects) put these projects designed by Ghent-based architects TRANS into context. Interviews with CEOs and policymakers give a 'behind the scenes' insight on the co-production of these pioneering projects and high-quality drawings and pictures show precise information on their construction. Exhibition: Traveling exhibition in Brussels, Rotterdam, London and Ghent (2018-2019).
