"In this book, Robert Bork offers a sweeping reassessment of late Gothic architecture and its fate in the Renaissance. In a chronologically organized narrative covering the whole of western and central Europe, he demonstrates that the Gothic design tradition remained inherently vital throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, creating spectacular monuments in a wide variety of national and regional styles. Bork argues that the displacement of this Gothic tradition from its long-standing position of artistic leadership in the years around 1500 reflected the impact of three main external forces: the rise of a rival architectural culture that championed the use of classical forms with a new theoretical sophistication; the appropriation of that architectural language by patrons who wished to associate themselves with papal and imperial Rome; and the chaos of the Reformation, which disrupted the circumstances of church construction on which the Gothic tradition had formerly depended. Bork further argues that art historians have much to gain from considering the character and fate of late Gothic architecture, not only because the monuments in question are intrinsically fascinating, but also because examination of the way their story has been told--and left untold, in many accounts of the "Northern Renaissance"--can reveal a great deal about schemes of categorization and prioritization that continue to shape the discipline even in the twenty-first century."--Page 4 of cover.

Le bombardement de la cathédrale de Reims par les Allemands en septembre 1914 a été, à tous égards, un grand événement qui a marqué les débats de la guerre : pour les Français, c'est le signe de la barbarie allemande et de la déchristianisation germanique, un crime de guerre contre la ville du sacre des rois, le symbole de Jeanne d'Arc. L'incendie est la vraie déclaration de guerre de la Kultur à l'allemande contre la civilisation à la française. Mais il y a beaucoup plus : cet incendie est le point d'orgue d'une grande polémique sur l'invention du gothique qui court en France depuis le XIXe siècle et dont les enjeux sont l'identité des deux pays. Une polémique qu'illustrent en particulier Huysmans dans son roman La Cathédrale, Emile Mâle, surtout, qui voit dans cette exaltation du gothique l'âme de la nation et du Renouveau catholique, Proust lui-même avec "La mort des cathédrales", Rodin et Maurice Barrès. A quoi les Allemands avaient opposé la cathédrale de Cologne, symbole de la germanité et du Reich de Guillaume II, et l'identification du gothique à la race germanique. En dépit de la fracture qui semblait ouverte à jamais entre la France deux fois envahie et l'Allemagne deux fois vaincue en ce XXe siècle, Reims et sa cathédrale ont fini par devenir, avec la rencontre de Charles de Gaulle et de Konrad Adenauer en 1962, le lieu par excellence de la réconciliation et de l'unification de l'Europe.

"Die Frage der 'byzantinischen' Kirchen im frühárpádischen Königreich Ungarn gehört zu den zentralen Problemen der Archäologie und Historiographie Ungarns und all der Balkanstaaten, die auf dem Gebiet des ehemaligen Árpádenreichs entstanden sind. Eine sorgfältige Durchsicht der Kirchen unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Forschungsgeschichte zeigt jedoch, dass nur ein geringer Teil der aus teilweise nationalistischen Gründen als byzantinisch bezeichneten Kirchen tatsächlich Vorbilder in Byzanz hatten"--Back cover. The question of "Byzantine" churches in the early Árpádic kingdom of Hungary is one of the central problems of archaeology and historiography of Hungary and all the Balkan states that emerged on the territory of the former Árpádic empire. However, a careful review of the churches, taking into account their history of research, shows that only a small part of the churches designated as Byzantine for partly nationalistic reasons actually had models in Byzantium.

À l’occasion du 800e anniversaire de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, Willibald Sauerländer prononçait un éloge que ce livre reprend dans une version revue et augmentée. Il se concentre particulièrement sur le souvenir des pratiques sacrées et des cultes, de la vénération des reliques jusqu’au sacre des rois, qui prêtèrent à la cathédrale une intense vie liturgique dans la France prérévolutionnaire. L’auteur évoque successivement le chœur en tant que métaphore iconographique de la Jérusalem céleste, les statues de saints comme guides vers leurs châsses et leurs reliques, et la cathédrale comme lieu de l’onction et du couronnement des souverains français. Le volume se conclut par un chapitre évoquant les sculptures de la cathédrale et leur lien spirituel avec le rituel du culte et des fêtes qui animaient l’église métropolitaine. Anlässlich der 800-Jahrfeier von Notre-Dame in Reims hielt Willibald Sauerländer eine Festrede, die vorliegender Band in einer revidierten und erweiterten Fassung wiedergibt. Im Fokus steht die Erinnerung an die sakralen Bräuche und Kulte von der Reliquienverehrung bis zur Königsweihe, die im vorrevolutionären Frankreich die Kathedrale mit rituellem Leben erfüllten. Nacheinander werden der Chor als bildliches Gleichnis des Himmlischen Jerusalem, die Statuen der Heiligen als Wegweiser zu ihren Schreinen und Reliquien sowie die Kathedrale als Ort der Salbung und Krönung der französischen Herrscher evoziert. Der Band schließt mit einem Nachtrag, der die Skulpturen der Kathedrale in ihrer spirituellen Verbindung mit dem Gottesdienstritus und den Festen evoziert, die die Metropolitankirche belebten.
