The library of Corpus Christi College is one of the most famous of all of those in Oxford and Cambridge. It is one of the few pre-1600 libraries to survive in something like its original form, and the only one still in use as a library. Its main space is still the original room built in 1517, and its furniture, if not original, is still early, most of it dating from 1604. A high proportion of its earliest book-stock, whether print or manuscript, still survives, and there is a wealth of documentation that makes it possible to chart the process of acquisition, especially the major donations of the Founder, Bishop Fox, and first President, John Claymond. And yet there is no modern, book-length study of the College Library. The present volume is intended to provide a scholarly but attractive and readable account of the Library from its conception in the mind of Richard Fox, to the appearance of its earliest surviving catalogue in 1589. It is extensively illustrated, highlighting the rarely-seen original bindings of the early books.

Nachdem die Kurfürstliche Bibliothek im Berliner Schloss 1661 für das gelehrte Publikum geöffnet worden war, entstand bis 1668 ein erster Katalog der damals vorhandenen Handschriften. Autor des Katalogs war Johann Raue (1610-1679), Bibliothekar der Kurfürstlichen Bibliothek. Raue beschrieb nicht nur die Handschriften in lateinischer und griechischer Schrift, sondern auch die orientalischen Handschriften, einige Inkunabeln (einschließlich der Gutenbergbibel) sowie alte, kostbare und annotierte Drucke. Raues Katalog verzeichnet 1.273 Bände. 0In Ursula Winters Ausgabe von Raues Katalog werden die Bestandsgeschichte der Kurfürstlichen Bibliothek sowie die Aufgaben des Bibliothekars nun ausführlich beschrieben. In dieser nach dem Original erstmalig herausgegebenen und kommentierten Ausgabe konnten fast alle Katalogeinträge mit den aktuellen Signaturen der beschriebenen Bände verknüpft werden. Für die Frühgeschichte der reichen Handschriftensammlung der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin bildet Raues Katalog die wichtigste Quelle.

"Les cisterciens sont moins connus pour avoir recherché et retravaillé les textes que pour leurs efforts de centralisation et d'unification dans l'architecture et les arts, la liturgie et la vie quotidienne, et pour leur utilisation active de l'écrit pragmatique - pour ne citer que ces quelques domaines. Et pourtant, leurs bibliothèques, parfois immenses, font mentir par leur richesse et les textes rarissimes ou inattendus qu'elles nous ont conservés l'idée d'un ordre peu consacré aux études. Où les cisterciens ont-ils trouvé ces textes? Quels étaient leurs réseaux? Avaient-il des critères pour choisir les textes à copier et les modèles? Before the Public Library explores the emergence of community-based lending libraries in the Atlantic World before the advent of the Public Library movement in the mid-nineteenth century. Essays by eighteen scholars from a range of disciplines seek to place, for the first time, community libraries within an Atlantic context over a two-century period. Taking a comparative approach, this volume shows that community libraries played an important – and largely unrecognized – role in shaping Atlantic social networks, political and religious movements, scientific and geographic knowledge, and economic enterprise. Libraries had a distinct role to play in shaping modern identities through the acquisition and circulation of specific kinds of texts, the fostering of sociability, and the building of community-based institutions.
