"The subject of this work is the rise and fall of Europe's aim to rebuild its position in global politics after the Cold War. With success in the unification of Europe and the subsequent deepening and enlargement of its integration, the Union set itself the ambitious task of becoming a global power, even a superpower. However, starting with the first decade of the XXI century, we have witnessed a rapid erosion of the international position of Europe (the EU). The author carefully analyses the causes of the EU's failure in pursuing the role of European representative, Europe thereby pretending to the role of one of three world powers. Besides cultural and demographic trends, the author identifies the main factors leading to this failure: the divergent interests of individual European powers, their incapacity to act in a geopolitical context and the rapid erosion of Europe's civilizational identity"--

Drawing upon numerous manuscripts from China and Central Asia, the articles presented in this volume by leading scholars in the field examine a broad range of topics on the multi-lingual, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic communities along the Silk Road in the medieval period, and cover such topics as the social history of Kucha, book history in Dunhuang, the spread of Manichaeism, the political history of Turkic and Khotanese Kingdoms, and the travelogue of the Buddhist pilgrim Xuanzang. By placing medieval sealing practices in a global and comparative perspective, the essays gathered in this volume challenge the traditional understanding of seals as tools of closure and validation in use since the dawn of civilization. Far from being a universal technique, sealing is revealed as a flexible idiom, selectively deployed to mediate entangled identities: the introduction of Buddhism in early medieval China; the Islamization of Sasanian and Byzantine cultures; even the advancement of diplomacy from northern Europe to Indonesia.

Lorsque, dans la seconde moitié du XIIe siècle, les villes d'Europe septentrionale acquièrent un statut juridique, elles se dotent d'un sceau et doivent choisir une image pour définir leur identité. Parmi les nombreuses représentations auxquelles les villes ont recours, l'architecture tient une place majeure. Le vocabulaire formel utilisé remonte parfois à l'Antiquité, mais dans certains cas les graveurs sont capables de mettre au point des portraits urbains singuliers répondant efficacement à un programme.0Ce dernier met en images des concepts comme l'identité collective, les rapports d'autorité ou même la liberté communale. L'auteur entreprend ici de replacer le sceau de ville dans le contexte de sa création, qu'il soit politique, artistique ou sociologique.
