Abstract

Since the beginning of the century, the field of architecture has fervently turned its attention to documenting the contemporary urban condition. Every city has been examined as a repository of architectural concepts, scrutinized as an urban manifesto, and recorded as a series of found objects. The Ordinary articulates a potential genealogy for this practice and for the genre of books that derived from it. Organized around conversations with the authors of three seminal texts that document the city-Rem Koolhaas on Delirious New York, Denise Scott Brown on Learning from Las Vegas, and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto on Made in Tokyo-this volume traces the history of these "books on cities" by examining the material they recorded, the findings they established, the arguments they advanced, and the projects they promoted. These conversations also question the assumptions underlying this practice and whether in its ubiquity it still remains a space of opportunity.

Abstract

Palermo Atlas charts a territory at the epicentre of key transformations of our time. More than a city, Palermo is a node in an expanded geography of flows – of people, capital, goods, data, species. Although historically Arab-Norman, the Sicilian capital has been reshaped by recent migrations and now counts Tamil, Somali and Nigerian identities as part of a complex anatomy. Its markets and architecture, nature and ecosystem, harbours and maritime routes, make it a laboratory for cross-pollination and an incubator of global conditions. At the same time, Palermo’s controversial modern history has left indelible traces – physical, emotional, political – and a unique legacy of civic experimentation. This study, commissioned by Manifesta 12 and undertaken by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, represents an alternative model for pre-biennial exploration, and is based on an omnivorous collection of stories gathered on the ground, of people, places, events and possibilities. With forewords by mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando and director of Manifesta Hedwig Fijen, it brings together the views of local observers such as Letizia Battaglia, Franco Maresco and Giorgio Vasta, along with critical texts by Marina Otero, Nora Akawi and Giuseppe Barbera, to ask whether Palermo might serve as prototype for the world to come.

Abstract

Abstract

In 2018, BLOX was opened on the waterfront in Copenhagen. Designed by the Dutch architecture studio OMA and funded by Realdania philanthropic association, BLOX is more than just a building. It is a mix of homes, offices, exhibition spaces, cafes and public areas with a vibrant urban life - elements that, when taken together, form a new destination at Bryghusgrunden, one of Copenhagen's perhaps most challenging construction sites. BLOX also provides a framework for projects such as the Danish Architecture Centre's changing architectural exhibitions on Danish and international architecture, and for BLOXHUB - an interdisciplinary, international innovation environment for sustainable urban development. Through interviews and essays, this book tells the story of the building's inception and foundational concept. It takes an extensive look at the many decisions and issues that arise in a project where ambitions of architecture, urban space and the life of the building always were extremely high - from the birth of the concept in 2004 to its uses today. It is at the same time also a history of the development of Copenhagen's waterfront into one of the city's key recreational spaces.

Abstract

Montage has been hailed as one of the key structural principles of modernity, yet its importance to the history of modern thought about cities and their architecture has never been adequately explored. In this groundbreaking new work, Martino Stierli charts the history of montage in late 19th-century urban and architectural contexts, its application by the early 20th-century avant-garde, and its eventual embrace by the postmodernist movement. With chapters focusing on photomontage, the film theories of Sergei Eisenstein, Mies van der Rohe's spatial experiments, and Rem Koolhaas's use of literary montage in his seminal manifesto Delirious New York (1978), Stierli demonstrates the centrality of montage in modern explorations of space, and in conceiving and representing the contemporary city. Beautifully illustrated, this interdisciplinary book looks at architecture, photography, film, literature, and visual culture, featuring works by artists and architects including Mies, Koolhaas, Hannah Hoech, George Grosz, El Lissitzky, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
