Abstract

This book provides essential lecture notes on solving large linear saddle-point systems, which arise in a wide range of applications and often pose computational challenges in science and engineering. The focus is on discussing the particular properties of such linear systems, and a large selection of algebraic methods for solving them, with an emphasis on iterative methods and preconditioning. The theoretical results presented here are complemented by a case study on potential fluid flow problem in a real world-application. This book is mainly intended for students of applied mathematics and scientific computing, but also of interest for researchers and engineers working on various applications. It is assumed that the reader has completed a basic course on linear algebra and numerical mathematics.

Abstract

This book provides a systematic survey of classical and recent results on hyperbolic cross approximation. Motivated by numerous applications, the last two decades have seen great success in studying multivariate approximation. Multivariate problems have proven to be considerably more difficult than their univariate counterparts, and recent findings have established that multivariate mixed smoothness classes play a fundamental role in high-dimensional approximation. The book presents essential findings on and discussions of linear and nonlinear approximations of the mixed smoothness classes. Many of the important open problems explored here will provide both students and professionals with inspirations for further research.

Abstract

The book collects and contributes new results on the theory and practice of ill-posed inverse problems. Different notions of ill-posedness in Banach spaces for linear and nonlinear inverse problems are discussed not only in standard settings but also in situations up to now not covered by the literature. Especially, ill-posedness of linear operators with uncomplemented null spaces is examined. Tools for convergence rate analysis of regularization methods are extended to a wider field of applicability. It is shown that the tool known as variational source condition always yields convergence rate results. A theory for nonlinear inverse problems with quadratic structure is developed as well as corresponding regularization methods. The new methods are applied to a difficult inverse problem from laser optics. Sparsity promoting regularization is examined in detail from a Banach space point of view. Extensive convergence analysis reveals new insights into the behavior of Tikhonov-type regularization with sparsity enforcing penalty.

Abstract

This volume gathers contributions from participants of the Introductory School and the IHP thematic quarter on Numerical Methods for PDE, held in 2016 in Cargese (Corsica) and Paris, providing an opportunity to disseminate the latest results and envisage fresh challenges in traditional and new application fields. Numerical analysis applied to the approximate solution of PDEs is a key discipline in applied mathematics, and over the last few years, several new paradigms have appeared, leading to entire new families of discretization methods and solution algorithms. This book is intended for researchers in the field.

Abstract

This book is the third edition of the 1999 lecture notes of the courses on interpolation theory that the author delivered at the Scuola Normale in 1998 and 1999. In the mathematical literature there are many good books on the subject, but none of them is very elementary, and in many cases the basic principles are hidden below great generality. In this book the principles of interpolation theory are illustrated aiming at simplification rather than at generality. The abstract theory is reduced as far as possible, and many examples and applications are given, especially to operator theory and to regularity in partial differential equations. Moreover the treatment is self-contained, the only prerequisite being the knowledge of basic functional analysis.

Abstract

Based on the second Women in Shape (WiSH) workshop held in Sirince, Turkey in June 2016, these proceedings offer the latest research on shape modeling and analysis and their applications. The 10 peer-reviewed articles in this volume cover a broad range of topics, including shape representation, shape complexity, and characterization in solving image-processing problems. While the first six chapters establish understanding in the theoretical topics, the remaining chapters discuss important applications such as image segmentation, registration, image deblurring, and shape patterns in digital fabrication. The authors in this volume are members of the WiSH network and their colleagues, and most were involved in the research groups formed at the workshop. This volume sheds light on a variety of shape analysis methods and their applications, and researchers and graduate students will find it to be an invaluable resource for further research in the area.

Abstract

This book offers an introduction to the algorithmic-numerical thinking using basic problems of linear algebra. By focusing on linear algebra, it ensures a stronger thematic coherence than is otherwise found in introductory lectures on numerics. The book highlights the usefulness of matrix partitioning compared to a component view, leading not only to a clearer notation and shorter algorithms, but also to significant runtime gains in modern computer architectures. The algorithms and accompanying numerical examples are given in the programming environment MATLAB, and additionally – in an appendix – in the future-oriented, freely accessible programming language Julia. This book is suitable for a two-hour lecture on numerical linear algebra from the second semester of a bachelor's degree in mathematics.

Abstract

Steffen Heinrich describes a motion planning system for automated vehicles. The planning method is universally applicable to on-road scenarios and does not depend on a high-level maneuver selection automation for driving strategy guidance. The author presents a planning framework using graphics processing units (GPUs) for task parallelization. A method is introduced that solely uses a small set of rules and heuristics to generate driving strategies. It was possible to show that GPUs serve as an excellent enabler for real-time applications of trajectory planning methods. Like humans, computer-controlled vehicles have to be fully aware of their surroundings. Therefore, a contribution that maximizes scene knowledge through smart vehicle positioning is evaluated. A post-processing method for stochastic trajectory validation supports the search for longer-term trajectories which take ego-motion uncertainty into account. Contents A Framework for Universal Driving Strategy Planning Sampling-Based Planning in Phase Space A Universal Approach for Driving Strategies Modeling Ego Motion Uncertainty Target Groups Scientists and students in the field of robotics, computer science, mechanical engineering Engineers in the field of vehicle automation, intelligent systems and robotics About the Author Steffen Heinrich has a strong background in robotics and artificial intelligence. Since 2009 he has been developing algorithms and software components for self-driving systems in research facilities and for automakers in Germany and the US.
