Abstract

Baldwin of Boulogne was born the youngest of three sons and marked out for a clerical career, yet in turn he became a First Crusader, first Latin count of Edessa and the founder of the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem. Nevertheless, remarkably, he has never been the subject of a full-length biography. This study examines in detail the stages of Baldwin's career, returning to the contemporary evidence to discover the qualities that enabled him not only to succeed his brother as ruler in 1100 but to maintain and expand the new kingdom of Jerusalem through the next eighteen years in the face of aggression from Muslim enemies and rivalry from fellow crusaders. --

Abstract

This manuscript is both a biography of an artist, Sophie Halaby, and a history of Jerusalem as seen through her eyes. Schor seeks to bring Halaby's story and that of Christian Arabs of Jerusalem to the English-reading public, as well as to look through this artist's eyes at the history of Jerusalem--a history often viewed through the lens of growing nationalism and punctuated by a series of violent events.

Abstract

"Next Year in Jerusalem recognizes that Jews have often experienced periods of exile and return in their long tradition. The fourteen papers in this collection examine this phenomenon from different approaches, genres, and media. They cover the period from biblical times through today. Among the exiles highlighted are the Babylonian Exile (sixth century BCE), the exile after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 CE), and the years after the Crusaders (tenth century CE). Events of return include the aftermath of the Babylonian Exile (fifth century BCE), the centuries after the Temple's destruction (first and second CE), and the years of the establishment of the modern State of Israel (1948 CE). In each instance authors pay close attention to the historical settings, the literature created by Jews and others, and the theological explanations offered (typically, this was seen as divine punishment or reward for Israel's behavior). The entire volume is written authoritatively and accessibly"--

Abstract

"The 12th Origeniana conference took place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, in June 2017. The theme of the conference was 'Origen's Legacy in the Holy Land - A Tale of Three Cities: Jerusalem, Caesarea and Bethlehem'. The present volume contains a large selection from the papers that were given at the conference. Many of the papers discuss various aspects and new perspectives of Origen's career and legacy in the Holy Land in the broad sense. As was the case also in previous conferences, there was an opportunity to deliver papers on other aspects of current Origen research. The volume contains five sections: Jerusalem and the Holy Land: Historical and Mystical Geography; The School of Caesarea and Eusebius; Origen's Latin Legacy: Rufinus and Jerome; Tradition, Innovation, and Heritage: Origen's Exegesis and Theology; and The Origenist Legacy: From Evagrius to Balthasar."--
