An overview of medieval monasticism across a variety of European landscapes. Monasticism became part of Europe from the early period of Christianity on the continent and developed into a powerful institution that had an effect on the greater church, on wider society, and on the landscape. Monastic communities were as diverse as the societies in which they lived, following a variety of rules, building monasteries influenced by common ideals and yet diverse in their regionalism, and contributing to the economic and spiritual well-being inside and outside their precincts. This interdisciplinary volume presents the diversity of medieval European monasticism with a particular emphasis on its impact on its immediate environs. Geographically it covers from the far west in Ireland, Scotland and Wales through Scandinavia, south to the Iberian Peninsula, and onto the continent to the east in Romania. Drawing on archaeological, art and architectural, textual and topographical evidence, the contributors explore how monastic communities were formed, how they created a landscape of monasticism, how they wove their identities with those around them, and how they interacted with all levels of society to leave a lasting imprint on European towns and rural landscapes

The volume is the first study of the archaeology of religion of Christian Nubia. It presents the material record of Nubian monasticism and offers a comparative analysis of this phenomenon. On the basis of archaeological and epigraphic data, the author reconstructs the life in Nubian monasteries. The work features a catalogue of archaeological sites tentatively identified as locations of monastic communities, as well as an overview of pertinent textual sources. Among the focal points are spatial aspects of the Nubian monastic movement, particularly the location of Nubian monasteries and their spatial organisation. Spatial analysis of monastic sites serves as a point of departure for insights into the social and economic matters of monastic communities in Nubia, which are central to the third part of the book. From the scarce sources the author recreates the complex spiritual and social dynamics present in monasteries, their management systems and competing hierarchies.

Le monachisme est fondamentalement un habitus, un mode de vie, une manière d'être. Il repose sur une discipline collective, découle d'une contrainte en principe librement assumée. Cette auto-coercition a duré tout le millénaire médiéval; ce consentement dure encore. Quel autre projet humain a ainsi traversé l'espace et le temps, quasiment intact? Du vie au xve siècle et plus particulièrement au cours d'un long xiie siècle, de la fondation de Fontevraud en 1101 à la mort de François d'Assise en 1226, cet ouvrage tente de restituer l'unité de ces formes de vie en-deçà des variantes et des reformulations qu'elles ont pu connaître au fil du temps. Jacques Dalarun analyse et anime ce projet singulier en mobilisant Règles (bénédictine, grandmontaine ou franciscaine), coutumes (de Cluny, de Cîteaux, de Fontevraud, du Paraclet), chroniques (de Raoul Glaber), vies de saints (de Robert d'Arbrissel, de Bérard des Marses), correspondances (d'Héloïse et d'Abélard). Il le réinscrit dans la société médiévale et interroge sa place et son mode de fonctionnement. Comment une société valorisant le lignage et la transmission héréditaire a-t-elle pu créer une fraternité fictive par un constant détournement de fidélité? Comment former un seul corps participant nuit et jour à l'opus Dei? C'est plus globalement l'expansion du monachisme par capillarité dans la société, à l'époque où le corps social dans son ensemble s'imprègne des valeurs du cloître, que capte cet ouvrage traversé d'une interrogation très contemporaine sur la vie collective. --
