This book looks at some key economic aspects of the environment. Our planet is threatened by a wrong belief in a wrongly formulated growth. The term?economic growth? can only mean an increase in welfare but is often wrongly identified with production growth that may be destructive to the environment. The figure of standard national income (NI) or Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is useful for many purposes but inadequate for environmental policy making. This book develops the concept of an environmentally Sustainable National Income (eSNI). eSNI is defined as the maximally attainable level of production, using the technology of the year under review, whereby the vital environmental functions (possible uses) of the not-human-made physical surroundings remain available for future generations. Judgement of environmental sustainability requires that both NI and eSNI are looked at jointly, alongside each other. Calculations for the Netherlands for 1990-2015 provide a proof of concept. National statistical bureaus around the world are advised to provide this information for their own countries, so that policy making around the world can use sound information about the national economies and the global environment.

Maps in newspapers generated many discussions among cartographers and geographers working from different approaches and theoretical backgrounds. This work examines these maps from a historiographical as well as a historical perspective. It considers three main questions, namely how maps in the press should be conceptualized, how cartographic images in newspapers have been studied, and how these images changed over time. In order to provide a perspective on the origins, development, and impact of war maps in the press, we will explore maps representing three geopolitical conflicts for Brazilian audiences: The War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), the World War II (1939–1945) and the War on Drugs in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas (1994–2010). By exploring maps on these wars, we will identify specific cartographic practices used in this genre as well as the connections that this mode has with other types of map production and consumption.

Atlas, dans la mythologie, représente un géant capable de tenir la Terre sur ses épaules sans en être écrasé. Mais quand Gérard Mercator publie en 1538 ce qu'il décide d'appeler un Atlas, le rapport des forces s'est complètement inversé : un "Atlas" est un ensemble de planches, imprimées sur du papier, quelque chose que l'on feuillette et que le cartographe tient dans sa main ; ce n'est plus la Terre que l'on a sur le dos et qui nous écrase, mais la Terre que l'on domine, que l'on possède et que l'on maîtrise totalement. Près de cinq siècles après, voilà que la situation s'inverse à nouveau : paraît un "Atlas" qui permet aux lecteurs de comprendre pourquoi il est tout à fait vain de prétendre dominer, maîtriser, posséder la Terre, et que le seul résultat de cette idée folle, c'est de risquer de se trouver écrasé par Celle que personne ne peut porter sur ses épaules", Bruno Latour.
