Existing studies of the Potter family tend to see Richard Potter through the lens of his most famous daughter, the socialist Beatrice (Webb) or through Beatrice and her eight siblings, all girls. In this book, their father, whose business activities sustained the family's upper-middle-class lifestyle and social position, is the subject of study in his own right. He was a new kind of businessman, a corporate capitalist, who operated on an international stage, but was also deeply involved with a more traditional way of doing business. This book looks inside the principal companies in which Potter was the chairman (the Great Western and Canadian Grand Trunk railways and the Gloucester Wagon Company) to assess his business acumen. It also examines in detail Potter's relationships with his wife and daughters, describing how he drew them into some of his key business decisions, and how he recognised the individuality of his daughters, encouraging them to read and think outside conventional boundaries, and to engage with the famous intellectuals who were part of the family circle, so shaping their lives as distinctive and strong adults. Beatrice, in particular, who was his business confidant for the last decade of his life, had no doubt that Potter played a key part in shaping her professional life.

This collection of studies in Italian literature is a tribute to Professor Corrigan on her retirement from active teaching at the University of Toronto. The essays, contributed by thirteen scholars in North America and Europe, cover a range of topics that reflect Professor Corrigan's many and varied interests. This book opens with a translation of Petrarch's first eclogue and ends with a comprehensive bibliography of Dr. Corrigan's publications. The eleven intervening essays examine some of the most significant moments in Italian literature from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. The influence of the Renaissance and pastoral drama on Elizabethan England is discussed, as well as the literary achievement in Italian-English relations brought about by the translation of Addison's Cato. The works of Roberto Bracco are considered in the light of the plays of Ibsen, who in the eyes of the critics influenced the work of every Italian dramatist. Bracco is shown to be a dramatist in his own right. Other subjects treated in this Festschrift are Manzone's conception of the profound significance of the moment in the interpretation of the individual personality, Verga's mastery of style and language, and Pirandello's special techniques of transforming a short story into a play.

"Recovering the history of a landmark Supreme Court case that has received surprisingly little attention from scholars, William P. Hustwit assesses the significant role that Alexander v. Holmes (1969) played in integrating the South's public schools and argues that the Alexander decision was ultimately more decisive than Brown v. Board in terminating public school segregation. Although the Brown ruling has rightly received the lion's share of attention, its ambiguous implementation language -- 'all deliberate speed' -- led to more than a decade of delays and resistance by whites. Alexander v. Holmes required 'integration now,' and less than a year later, thousands of children were attending integrated schools"--

"While historians of medieval Spain have been unanimous in acknowledging the significance of Infante Manuel's impact on the reign of his brother, Alfonso X, the Wise, and the rise to power of his nephew, Sancho IV, none have attempted a biography of his life, convinced there was insufficient material to justify the endeavor. Systematic and persistent research over many years, however, has uncovered a profusion of facts and figures which, together with the evidence discovered in numerous unedited archival documents, effectively establishes the prince as a major player during Alfonso's troubled rule. This is the first and only book-length biography of Prince Manuel, the progenitor of the longest ruling dynasty in the history of Spain. In his capacity as the monarch's closest advisor, Manuel assiduously maintained critical working relationships with the most notable leaders of his age including James I and Peter III of Aragon, Louis IX and Philippe III of France, Edward I and Queen Eleanor of England, and Popes Alexander IV and Gregory X among a host of other royal and noble personages from Europe and the Iberian Peninsula. Intended for specialists in the field of medieval Iberian history and literature, Dawn of a Dynasty is a highly reliable source work and a significant contribution to our knowledge of late-thirteenth-century Castile."--

Explores the how, why, and what of contemporary Chicanx culture, including punk rock, literary fiction, photography, mass graves, and digital and experimental installation art.0'Racial Immanence' attempts to unravel a Gordian knot at the center of the study of race and discourse: it seeks to loosen the constraints that the politics of racial representation put on interpretive methods and on our understanding of race itself. Marissa K. López argues that reading Chicanx literary and cultural texts primarily for the ways they represent Chicanxness only reinscribes the very racial logic that such texts ostensibly set out to undo. 'Racial Immanence' proposes to read differently; instead of focusing on representation, it asks what Chicanx texts do, what they produce in the world, and specifically how they produce access to the ineffable but material experience of race. Intrigued by the attention to disease, disability, abjection, and sense experience that she sees increasing in Chicanx visual, literary, and performing arts in the late-twentieth century, López explores how and why artists use the body in contemporary Chicanx cultural production. 'Racial Immanence' takes up works by writers like Dagoberto Gilb, Cecile Pineda, and Gil Cuadros, the photographers Ken Gonzales Day and Stefan Ruiz, and the band Piñata Protest to argue that the body offers a unique site for pushing back against identity politics. In so doing, the book challenges theoretical conversations around affect and the post-human and asks what it means to truly consider people of color as writers and artists. Moving beyond abjection, López models Chicanx cultural production as a way of fostering networks of connection that deepen our attachments to the material world.
