Gegenstand der vorliegenden Publikation sind die vier britischen Verleger William (1800-1883) und Robert Chambers (1802-1871), C. Kegan Paul (1828-1902) sowie J. M. Dent (1849-1926). Im Rückgriff auf biographische Ansätze der Leserforschung und Verlagsgeschichte arbeitet die Autorin die konkreten Umstände der Lesesozialisation der Verleger, ihren Bezug zum Lesen und zum Buch sowie die Auswirkungen auf das Selbstverständnis der Verleger und ihren Einfluss auf die Lesekultur ihrer Zeit heraus.

"The letters in this edition (Bodleian MS. Eng. lett. c. 129) present Tonson's life as a bookseller, his circle, and his important intellectual and social interests. They are exclusively from Tonson to his nephew and sometime partner, Jacob Tonson the younger, dealing with his affairs from the moment he first took possession of his country estate following his retirement and recent financial success. They concern, among other things, literature, publishing, friendship, and cultural and social affinity, theology, law, public office, and provincial life, agriculture, horticulture, vitriculture, and much more. They are an important archival record in the Bodleian's holdings of the early eighteenth century and should be better known. They are published her for the first time" -- p. 16.

En 2019, elle est devenue la plus valorisée des grandes sociétés mondiales avec 840 milliards de dollars de capitalisation boursière et plus de 500 000 employés. L'irrésistible ascension d'Amazon, du livre à... tout ce qui peut se vendre, a totalement bouleversé notre quotidien. Surtout, Amazon va transformer notre futur : grâce aux métadonnées et à Alexa, l'assistant vocal qui sait tout de nous, la firme entend connaître nos désirs pour mieux les devancer. Elle ambtionne de "cracker" (pour reprendre le terme des hackers) tous les secteurs de la distribution, les uns après les autres : livre, textile, alimentation, pharmacie... Aucun empire n'étant éternel, ce livre décortique ce qui fait la force et la puissance stratégique de la firme de Seattle, tout en montrant les limites de cette situation de superdomination, notamment en termes sociaux et fiscaux. Mais Amazon est-il notre plus grand objet de crainte ? 870 millions de Chinois utilisent Alipay, le système de paiement d'Ali Baba pour tous leurs achats. En comparaison, les 310 millions de clients Amazon semblent un peu... modestes.

In the 20th century, cumulative millions of readers received books by mail from clubs like the Book-of-the-Month Club, the Book Society or BertelsmannClub. This Element offers an introduction to book clubs as a distribution channel and cultural phenomenon, and shows that book clubs and book commerce are linked inextricably. It argues that a global perspective is necessary to understand the cultural and economic impact of book clubs in the 20th and into the 21st century. It also explores central reasons for book club membership, condensing them into four succinct categories: convenience, community, concession and, most importantly, curation.
