Im Zuge der letzten großen Klassikdiskussion in den 1990er Jahren wurde Klassik als ein vom Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Normativität und Historizität (Wilhelm Voßkamp) gekennzeichnetes Phänomen definiert. Diese Paradoxie will der Band aufheben, indem er von der Frage nach dem Wesen von Klassik(en) und Klassikern absieht und den Blick stattdessen auf die Grundlagen und Mechanismen ihrer Langlebigkeit richtet. Klassisch sind diejenigen Phänomene zu nennen, die je nach Kontext und Bedarf in ihren Funktionen bestätigt, reaktualisiert, adaptiert, kurz: gebraucht werden. Klassik wird diesem Verständnis zufolge als eine in intermedialen und interkulturellen Rezeptionsprozessen erfahr- und beobachtbare kulturelle Praxis aufgefasst.Der Band versteht sich als Grundstein für eine weitgefasste kulturwissenschaftliche Theorie der Klassik. Er versammelt Beiträge zum Gebrauch von literarischen, musikalischen und modischen Klassikern in Hoch- und Populärkultur, Politik und Gesellschaft, in vielfältigen medialen und (national-)kulturellen Kontexten, die Anstoß zu weiteren Analysen in unterschiedlichen Fach- und Kulturbereichen geben sollen. This volume counters the oft-noted semantic imprecision of the term "classicism" in scientific and ordinary discourse with a functional definition of the concept. The essays on literature, music, and fashion in different national and cultural contexts describe classicism as a valid norm across time; they bring classicism into focus as a cultural praxis that is experienced and observable in intermedial and intercultural processes.

The canon, as much an ideology as it is a body of texts perceived to be intrinsic to the high school English classroom, has come under scrutiny for maintaining status quo narratives about whiteness, masculinity, heterosexuality, ability, and even those associated with American ideals of self-reliance, the good life, and the self-made man. Teaching practices around these texts may also reinforce harmful practices and ways of thinking, including those connected to notions of culture, literary merit, and methods of reading, teaching, and learning. Teaching the Canon in 21st Century Classrooms offers innovative, critical ways of reading, thinking about, and teaching canonical texts in 21st century classrooms. Responding to the increasingly pluralized, digitized, global 21st century English classroom, chapter authors make explicit the ideologies of a canonical text of focus, while also elaborating a pedagogical approach that de-centers the canon, bridges past and present, applies critical theory, and celebrates the rich identities of 21st century readers. In using this book, teachers will be especially poised to take on the canon in their classroom and, thus, to open up their curricula to ideas, values, concerns, and narratives beyond those embedded in the canonical texts.

The Law Code of Simeon of Rev-Ardashir, originally written in Persian, was translated into Syriac by a monk of Bēt-Qaṭrāyē. The Code's author, possibly the early 7th century Metropolitan mentioned in the letters of Patriarch Īšoʿ-yahb III, aims to clarify the origins of the Christian legal system, and to address family matters, including inheritance and the role of slaves.
