Abstract

There are no other affordable books available on this important subject. This is the only book that looks closely at the early centuries of Collage. Collage is popular, fascinating and historically revealing. Accompanies an exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh from June to October 2019. Collage is one of the defining subjects in Modern Art. It is as important and popular today as it has ever been. This definitive survey of collage and 3-D sculpture (made from bits and pieces stuck and nailed together) spans the whole period from about 1600 to the present day. Each page of this book is filled with fascination. The lavish illustrations include images of items such as books with fold-out flaps, Victorian collage, Valentine and greeting cards, double exposure photographs, album covers such as Sgt Peppers, and many curiosities and items from Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Pop, 70's counterculture, video and computerised collage. Exhibition: Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art (Modern Two), Edinburgh, UK (29.06.-27.10.2019).

Abstract

Collage and Literature analyzes how and why the history of literature and art changed irrevocably beginning in the early years of the twentieth century, and what that change has meant for late modernism and postmodernism. Starting from Pablo Picasso’s 1912 gesture, breaking the fundamental logic of representation, of pasting a piece of oilcloth onto a canvas, and moving up to Kenneth Goldsmith’s 2015 reading of an autopsy report of an unarmed young black man shot by police (which he framed as a poem entitled Michael Brown’s Body) this volume moves through a series of case studies encapsulating issues of juxtaposition and framing, the central ways identify collage. Its thesis is that collage—and, in fact, only collage—meaningfully overcomes formal and generic boundaries between the literary and the non-literary. The overwriting of these traditional boundaries happens in the service of collage’s anti-narrative drive, a drive that may be, in turn, interruptive or destructive. The expansion of collage’s horizons— broadly, to include the use of radical juxtaposition in the arts—reveals a surprisingly wide range of American artists and writers using the logic of juxtaposition as they imagine new worlds, disrupt accepted narratives about society and art, and create meaning through form as much as through paraphrasable content. In addressing a wide range of contested issues, recent artists realize the shocking force of collage. By recovering this shock, Collage and Literature restores collage to its multimedia origins in order to reveal its powerful and political affects

Abstract

Abstract

Examines the multiple angles of the avant-garde poetry and art of Joe Brainard Joe Brainard’s work occupies the literal margins of New York school poetry, while also figuratively influencing its aesthetic margins, shaping the school from both within and without. Brainard was not only an important illustrator and friend to many New York school poets, he was also a respected collage artist, miniature artist, cartoonist, avid letter writer and serious poet. As the canon of avant-garde American poetry warmly embraces his poetry alongside his art, the field of literary criticism is freshly responding with enthusiasm to Brainard’s literary contribution with sophisticated scholarship and first-hand accounts which attend to both his textual and visual nuances. This collection offers the first place for the importance of Brainard’s poetry, collaborations and art to be recognised for their contribution and influence, all in one place.Key FeaturesFeatures series of established and new voices in contemporary American poetrySelected essays all focus on writing but transgress disciplinary lines to also incorporate consideration of Brainard’s visual practice at the same timeSuggests Brainard’s work informingly lined, bound , and shaped the poetics of American avant-gardeShifts critical attention to Brainard’s writing (while also attending to his well known comics and collages)Offers further analysis of Brainard’s art and work as uniquely queer in aesthetic practice

Abstract

The 2019/20 issue of 'The Serving Library Annual' is entirely devoted to the late Italian designer, artist, inventor and polymath Bruno Munari. The core of the annual is the first English translation of 'Obvious Code' (Cioice ovvio), the 1971 collection of Munari's own writings, sketches and poems about his own work, published by arrangement with Corraini, who issued the book's anastatic edition in 2017. It includes iconic design objects such as the Abitacolo, ground-breaking artworks such as his 1952 series of hand-made projection slides, and little known rhymes about the art market, as well as an original piece from his "unreadable books" series. In the margins, dozens of artists, designers, writers and curators have been invited to annotate Munari's texts - with a sketch or a quotation, an in-depth analysis, a fragment of conversation, a free association - as a testament to the depth of the influence exerted on international art by an often underacknowledged pioneer, whose visual experiments were so iconic as to become a self-evident part of visual culture, an anonymous invention: an obvious code.
