Abstract

A lavishly illustrated celebration of these glorious land animals-and a poignant lament for their futureElephants are among the most beloved of all creatures. Their behavior can seem almost human, from their complex social interactions to their need to mourn their dead. They are also among the most persecuted of animals, subjected to untold cruelty at the hands of humans down through the ages. In this stunningly illustrated book, Errol Fuller provides a rich and moving portrait of Elephants, exploring their natural history, the legends that have grown up around them, their unique place in art and literature, and their urgent need for protection today.Fuller traces the evolution of these majestic land animals from prehistoric mammoths and mastodons to today's African and Asian Elephants, and looks at Elephant behavior, herd dynamics, and social life. He examines the role of Elephants in cultures around the world, from folklore and fine art to the exploitation of Elephants as war machines and circus animals. Fuller also discusses the importance of conservation, warning that continued poaching and habitat degradation could send these iconic animals the way of the Dodo.Featuring many evocative photos never before published, Elephant is a fittingly exquisite tribute to these breathtaking creatures.

Abstract

In this comprehensive volume of essays and extraordinary photos, environmental activist Bell and journalist Pinnock (Wild as It Gets) call attention to the threat posed to elephants by poachers. The authors give voice to the people working daily to preserve savanna populations and provide a platform for wildlife photographers to showcase eye-opening images from Africa. The text deals with elephants' value both to the environment and to poachers, emphasizing that pachyderms are "constant gardeners” whose "feeding habits create microhabitats for smaller creatures.” In addition, they are "major tree pruners... composting machines and fertilising agents.” Other sections focus on attempts in recent decades to halt the reckless slaughter of elephants and to significantly curb the trade in ivory, for centuries used variously in "piano keys, artistic carvings, cutlery, daggers and jewellery.” Bell and Pinnock conclude with ways to mitigate the problem, offering a list of NGOs to support and discussing what the reader should and should not do to help. Bolstered with striking, sometimes magnificent images of elephants in their native environs, this collection proves to be marvelously informative and widely appealing. With more than 250 color photos. (Apr.) [www.publishersweekly.com]

Abstract

Abstract

In this volume of 15 articles, contributors from a wide range of disciplines present their analyses of Disney movies and Disney music, which are mainstays of popular culture. The power of the Disney brand has heightened the need for academics to question whether Disney’s films and music function as a tool of the Western elite that shapes the views of those less empowered. Given its global reach, how the Walt Disney Company handles the role of race, gender, and sexuality in social structural inequality merits serious reflection according to a number of the articles in the volume. On the other hand, other authors argue that Disney productions can help individuals cope with difficult situations or embrace progressive thinking. The different approaches to the assessment of Disney films as cultural artifacts also vary according to the theoretical perspectives guiding the interpretation of both overt and latent symbolic meaning in the movies. The authors of the 15 articles encourage readers to engage with the material, showcasing a variety of views about the good, the bad, and the best way forward.
