Abstract

The Concept of Outdoor Education for Elementary School is a "guide", how, when, where and in which forms it is appropriate to include the outdoor education to the elementary school curriculum. We focus on fact that short-term and mid-term forms of outdoor education shoud be prepared and guided by the teacher himself. The Concept includes detailed examples of educational topics applicable in the urban and rural environment, guidance to ensure pupils´ safety, legislative regulations related to outdoor education and examples of the use of specific teaching aids.

Abstract

This monography provides a description of traditional natural and cultural values in the protection and preservation of UNESCO heritage. The case study in territory are on the Slovak side Vlkolínec (for 25 years in UNESCO) and on the Czech side the Slavonic fortified settlement in Mikulčice, which is a potential candidate for registration on the UNESCO heritage list. In particular, practical options for using existing tools for the protection of monuments, such as land use plans, management plans or monument protection zones, are mentioned. The publication is the outcome of the project NKP3040D001: UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Life of Municipalities, Cities and Regions.

Abstract

Middle East and Mediterranean region locates at a crossroad of global climatic patterns. The region is under the influence of a convergence of different maritime conditions which together with extensive adjacent land masses marked by extreme differences in topographical features transporting continental air masses lead to a diverse climate. This edited volume is based on the best papers accepted for presentation during the 1st Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-1), Tunisia 2018. It gives new insights on patterns and mechanisms of past, present and future climate/environmental changes mainly on Middle East and Mediterranean region by international researchers. The book is of interest to all researchers in the fields of climate, paleo-climate and paleo-environmental studies. Main topics include: • Spatio-temporal Patterns of Climate Change • Sea Level Variability • Climate Change Impacts and Migration Schemes • Paleoclimate Evolution • Paleoenvironmental Evolution.

Abstract

Human geography is a branch of geography that deals with the study of people and their communities, cultures, economies, and interactions with the environment by studying their relations with and across space and place. Human geography attends to human patterns of social interaction, as well as spatial level interdependencies, and how they influence or affect Earth’s environment. It concentrates on the study of human activities by using qualitative and quantitative research methods. Economic geography is the study of place, distribution and spatial organization of economic activities across the world. It represents a traditional sub-field of the discipline of geography. However, many economists have also approached it in ways more typical of the discipline of economics. Economic geography is also defined by the geographers as the study of human economic activities under varying sets of conditions associated with production, location, distribution, consumption, and exchange of resources. Environmental geography is a branch of geography that describes the spatial aspects of interactions between humans and the natural world. It is the study of systematic description of different components of environment and interaction of human beings with these components. This book explains and examines various facets of the three related subjects of human, economic and environmental geography.

Abstract

This book discusses the reality of implementing sustainable forest management measures. Rather than simply offering theoretical descriptions, the book comprehensively details how sustainably managed forests can only be achieved through the cooperation and support of foresters, politicians, business leaders, local communities, consumers of forest-based goods and services, and the general public. The book also aims to raise public awareness of the factors involved in attaining the true sustainability of forest management, and the consequences of failing to do so, as well as the current issues facing sustainable forest management such as land ownership and land-use rights, political corruption, environmental stressors, and economic pressure. In 17 chapters, the book will appeal to academics and teachers in forestry and related areas, government practitioners, development agencies, and NGOs.

Abstract

How is the vegetation distribution influencing the erosion and surface formation in the different eco zones of Chile? To answer this question, it is mandatory to possess fundamental knowledge about plant species habitats, occurrence and their dynamics. In his study Christian Bödinger utilizes satellite imagery in combination with machine learning to derive maps of land use and land cover (LULC) in four study sites along a climatic gradient and to monitor vegetation using monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series. The findings contribute to a better understanding of climate impacts on Chilean vegetation and serve as a basis of landscape evolution models. Contents TanDEM-X DEM, Sentinel Optical and Radar Data, Landsat Surface Reflectance Machine Learning Using SVMs and Random Forest Statistical Time-Series Evaluation Maps of Land Use and Cover (LULC) Time-Series Showing the Impact of ENSO Target Groups Scientists, lecturers and students in the field of geology and ecology Geoscientists and Ecologists with a focus on remote sensing About the Author Christian Bödinger holds a M.Sc. in Physical Geography from the University of Tübingen, Germany. His focus in research lies on remote sensing and image analysis for environmental applications. He is currently working for a company focusing on aquatic remote sensing.

Abstract

The 50th anniversary of the Disaster Research Center of the University of Delaware provoked a discussion of the field’s background, its accomplishments, and its future directions. Participants representing many disciplines brought new methods to bear on perennial problems relevant to effective disaster management and policy formation. However, new concerns were raised, stemming from the fact that we live today in a globally unfolding environmental crisis every bit as pressing and worrisome as that of the 1960s when the Disaster Research center was founded. This volume brings together ideas of participants from that workshop as well as other contributors. Topics include: the history and evolution of disaster research, innovations in disaster management, disaster policy, and ethical considerations of disaster research. Readers interested in science and technology, public policy, community action, and the evolution of the social sciences will find much of interest in this collection.

Abstract

This book discusses a variety of different perspectives involved in biodiversity management and bio-sequestration projects in Australia, working towards achieving adaptive governance in carbon farming. It not only examines landholders’ motivation but also the challenges of integrating biodiverse forests into the agricultural landscape. Drawing on the contrast between science and policy stakeholders’ views on carbon farming and the practical challenges of achieving adaptive governance, the book discusses the significant gap between theory and practice encountered in this field of study. The book suggests ways of improving the decision-making capacity of government officials and policymakers involved in managing carbon and biodiversity markets, as well as introducing measures to promote adaptive governance by engaging landholders in more effective land conservation. Climate change is a pressing issue on the global political agenda, and this book makes an important contribution to the ongoing debate. This book will be an invaluable reference for practitioners, policymakers and researchers interested in alternative forms of governance in natural resource management.

Abstract

"This is a book that any researcher contemplating a large scale interdisciplinary research project investigating social-ecological systems should read. It provides real world tangible examples of such projects and offers lessons that can be used by others to be more successful in their own research efforts." - Robert J Summers, Academic Director, Sustainability Council, University of Alberta, Canada Collaboration across boundaries is widely recognized as a vital requisite for the advancement of innovative science to address problems such as environmental degradation and global change. This book takes collaboration across boundaries seriously by focusing on the many challenges and practices involved in team science when spanning disciplinary, organizational, national and other divides. The authors draw on a shared framework for managing the challenges of collaboration across boundaries as applied to the science of understanding complex social-ecological systems. Teams working across boundaries on diverse social-ecological systems in countries around the world report their challenges and share their practices, outcomes and lessons learned. From these diverse experiences arise many commonalities and also some important differences. These provide the basis for a set of recommendations to any collaborators intending to use science as a tool to better understand social-ecological systems and to improve their management and governance. Stephen G. Perz is Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law at the University of Florida, USA. He works collaboratively on conservation and development issues in the Amazon, crossing disciplinary, organizational and national boundaries. This work has been funded by NASA, NSF, USAID, the Moore Foundation, and other sources, and has resulted in over 100 publications in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets.
