Abstract

This book aims to provide readers with the current information, developments, and trends in a time series analysis, particularly in time series data patterns, technical methodologies, and real-world applications. This book is divided into three sections and each section includes two chapters. Section 1 discusses analyzing multivariate and fuzzy time series. Section 2 focuses on developing deep neural networks for time series forecasting and classification. Section 3 describes solving real-world domain-specific problems using time series techniques. The concepts and techniques contained in this book cover topics in time series research that will be of interest to students, researchers, practitioners, and professors in time series forecasting and classification, data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence.

Abstract

Bayesian networks (BN) have recently experienced increased interest and diverse applications in numerous areas, including economics, risk analysis and assets and liabilities management, AI and robotics, transportation systems planning and optimization, political science analytics, law and forensic science assessment of agency and culpability, pharmacology and pharmacogenomics, systems biology and metabolomics, psychology, and policy-making and social programs evaluation. This strong and varied response results not least from the fact that plausibilistic Bayesian models of structures and processes can be robust and stable representations of causal relationships. Additionally, BNs' amenability to incremental or longitudinal improvement through incorporating new data affords extra advantages compared to traditional frequentist statistical methods. Contributors to this volume elucidate various new developments in these aspects of BNs.

Abstract

This open access book is based on selected presentations from Topic Study Group 21: Mathematical Applications and Modelling in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME 13), held in Hamburg, Germany on July 24–31, 2016. It contributes to the theory, research and teaching practice concerning this key topic by taking into account the importance of relations between mathematics and the real world. Further, the book addresses the “balancing act” between developing students’ modelling skills on the one hand, and using modelling to help them learn mathematics on the other, which arises from the integration of modelling into classrooms. The contributions, prepared by authors from 9 countries, reflect the spectrum of international debates on the topic, and the examples presented span schooling from years 1 to 12, teacher education, and teaching modelling at the tertiary level. In addition the book highlights professional learning and development for in-service teachers, particularly in systems where the introduction of modelling into curricula means reassessing how mathematics is taught. Given its scope, the book will appeal to researchers and teacher educators in mathematics education, as well as pre-service teachers and school and university educators.

Abstract

This Special Issue aims to be a compilation of new results in the areas of differential and difference Equations, covering boundary value problems, systems of differential and difference equations, as well as analytical and numerical methods. The objective is to provide an overview of techniques used in these different areas and to emphasize their applicability to real-life phenomena, by the inclusion of examples. These examples not only clarify the theoretical results presented, but also provide insight on how to apply, for future works, the techniques used.
