Loose Joints is proud to present Photographs, a story of British artist Jack Davison's experiments with image making from 2007 to present. A self-taught photographer, Davison makes pictures like a painter paints, using intuition and instinct to craft photographs that excavate the surreal and sensual from the fabric of daily life. Relying heavily on chiaroscuro and the power of photography to obscure as well as reveal, Davison's unique, crafted approach to image-making oscillates from crisp, sharp details into dissolving mirages, the world inverted and submerged. With their deep shadows and tight framing, the images in Photographs have an unmistakeably cinematic quality; each layered image leaves a breadcrumb trail of associations that extend far beyond it's initial context. Despite Jack's recent successes, he remains humble and all-encompassing in his photography, and the book indistinguishably shifts from staged, meticulous editorial setups to simple everyday occurences, infused with mystery and depth.

Fotografie wordt Kunst! Photo-Secession in Holland 1890-1937 bevat ook werk van onbekende fotografen als Antonia Arens-Tepe, Johan Huijsen, Truus Haasbroek, Berend Zweers en Abraham Weinberg en relatief onbekend vroeg werk van fotografen als Eva Besnyö en Piet Zwart. Deze frisse blik completeert het beeld van de vroege Nederlandse kunstfotografie en laat zien hoe inspiratie uit de schilderkunst geleidelijk overliep in modernisme.Fotografie wordt Kunst! Photo-Secession in Holland 1890-1937 toont prachtige foto’s uit eind negentiende, begin twintigste eeuw van fotograferende kunstschilders zoals George H. Breitner, Willem Witsen en Louis Apol, maar ook van vakfotografen die in hun vrije werk kunst maakten, zoals Bernard Eilers, Adriaan Boer en Henri Berssenbrugge.Het boek neemt u mee in de wijze waarop een eeuw geleden kunstenaars en fotografen het medium fotografie tot kunstvorm maakten. Dat streven was internationaal: Amerika kende bijvoorbeeld de beroemde Photo-Secession; in Engeland bestond de ‘Brotherhood of the Linked Ring’. Ook Nederland kende een dergelijke beweging en conservator fotografie Maartje van den Heuvel geeft daar inzicht in. Zij deed hiervoor hernieuwd onderzoek in de fotocollectie waar zich bij uitstek veel vroege kunstfotografie bevindt: de Prentenkabinet-collectie van Universiteit Leiden.

Almost immediately after the invention of photography, Scottish photographers took their clunky cameras on the road to capture the stories of peoples and communities touched by the forces of British imperialism. For the next thirty years, their journeys would take them far from their homes in the Lowlands to the Canadian wilderness and the treaty ports and rivers of China. The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography is about the interplay between these photographers' ambitions and the needs and desires of the people they met. Anthony Lee tracks the work of several famous innovators of the art form, including the pioneering team of D.O. Hill and Robert Adamson in Edinburgh; Canada's first great photographers, the Scottish immigrants William Notman and Alexander Henderson in Montreal; the globetrotting John Thomson in Hong Kong; and Lai Afong, the first widely known Chinese photographer. Lee reveals their pictures in the context of migration and the social impact wrought by worldwide trade and competing nationalisms. A timely book, it tells of an era when cameras emerged to give shape and meaning to some of the most defining moments brought about by globalization in the nineteenth century. Beautifully written and richly illustrated in full colour, The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography weaves stories together to show that even the earliest pictures were sites of fierce historical struggle.
