Abstract

Abstract

Loose Joints is proud to present Photographs, a story of British artist Jack Davison's experiments with image making from 2007 to present. A self-taught photographer, Davison makes pictures like a painter paints, using intuition and instinct to craft photographs that excavate the surreal and sensual from the fabric of daily life. Relying heavily on chiaroscuro and the power of photography to obscure as well as reveal, Davison's unique, crafted approach to image-making oscillates from crisp, sharp details into dissolving mirages, the world inverted and submerged. With their deep shadows and tight framing, the images in Photographs have an unmistakeably cinematic quality; each layered image leaves a breadcrumb trail of associations that extend far beyond it's initial context. Despite Jack's recent successes, he remains humble and all-encompassing in his photography, and the book indistinguishably shifts from staged, meticulous editorial setups to simple everyday occurences, infused with mystery and depth.

Abstract

Abstract

"'Campaign Child' indulges in the language of commercial photography to create new meanings out of disparate objects, bodies and situations. Each image attempts a balance: between the pure, clean, functional axis of photography as a communication tool, and the slippages that occur when juxtaposition and narrative gaps leave space for the mind to unfold. Yuan’s images often feel as if you have stumbled into a story in medias res: a young girl emerging from a tablecloth, an escaped budgie being trapped, a hospital bed dripping with liquid. Through unlikely combinations, Yuan asks us to consider what is existing outside the frame and forge links across disparate scenes, where each photograph bounces off the other to create uncanny new contexts. By restructuring commercial photoshoots into a space of imagination and play, Campaign Child also speaks of the uneasy relationship between Western capitalist motifs and the global contexts they insert themselves into, while questioning how desire is validated through photography."--photographer's website.

Abstract

In this book, Osborne demonstrates why and how photography as photography has survived and flourished since the rise of digital processes, when many anticipated its dissolution into a generalized system of audio-visual representations or its collapse under the relentless overload of digital imagery. He examines how photography embodies, contributes to, and even in effect critiques how the contemporary social world is now imagined, how it is made present and how the concept and the experience of the Present itself is produced. Osborne bases his discussions primarily in cultural studies and visual cultural studies. Through an analysis of different kinds of photographic work in distinct contexts, he demonstrates how aspects of photography that once appeared to make it vulnerable to redundancy turn out to be the basis of its survival and have been utilized by much important photographic work of the last three decades.

Abstract

Almost immediately after the invention of photography, Scottish photographers took their clunky cameras on the road to capture the stories of peoples and communities touched by the forces of British imperialism. For the next thirty years, their journeys would take them far from their homes in the Lowlands to the Canadian wilderness and the treaty ports and rivers of China. The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography is about the interplay between these photographers' ambitions and the needs and desires of the people they met. Anthony Lee tracks the work of several famous innovators of the art form, including the pioneering team of D.O. Hill and Robert Adamson in Edinburgh; Canada's first great photographers, the Scottish immigrants William Notman and Alexander Henderson in Montreal; the globetrotting John Thomson in Hong Kong; and Lai Afong, the first widely known Chinese photographer. Lee reveals their pictures in the context of migration and the social impact wrought by worldwide trade and competing nationalisms. A timely book, it tells of an era when cameras emerged to give shape and meaning to some of the most defining moments brought about by globalization in the nineteenth century. Beautifully written and richly illustrated in full colour, The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography weaves stories together to show that even the earliest pictures were sites of fierce historical struggle.
