Abstract

This book investigates the physical layer aspects of high-speed transmission on twisted-pair copper wires, where the most performance-critical components are multi-input multi-output (MIMO) precoding and multi-line spectrum optimization as well as optimized scheduling of the transmission time slots on the fiber to the distribution point (FTTdp) copper link. The book brings theoretical results into the implementation, which requires the introduction of realistic channel models and more practical implementation constraints as found in the copper access network. A good understanding of the transmission medium, twisted-pair telephone cable bundles is the basis for this work. Starting from the analysis of measurement data from twisted-pair cable bundles at high frequencies, it presents a MIMO channel model for the FTTdp network, which allows the characteristic effects of high-frequency transmission on copper cable bundles in simulation to be reproduced and the physical layer transmission methods on the copper channels to be analyzed and optimize. The book also presents precoding optimization for more general power constraints and implementation constraints. The maximization of data rate in a transmission system such as G.fast or VDSL is a combinatorial problem, as the rate is a discrete function of the number of modulated bits. Applying convex optimization methods to the problem offers an efficient and effective solution approach that is proven to operate close to the capacity of the FTTdp channel. In addition to higher data rates, low power consumption is another important aspect of the FTTdp network, as it requires many access nodes that are supplied with power from the subscriber side over the twisted- pair copper wires. Discontinuous operation is a method of quickly adding and removing lines from the precoding group. To implement this, the system switches between different link configurations over time at a high frequency. The transmission times of all lines are jointly optimized with respect to the current rate requirements. Discontinuous operation is used to save power, but also makes it possible to further increase the data rates, taking the current subscriber traffic requirements into account. These methods are compared with theoretical upper bounds, using realistic channel models and conditions of a system implementation. The performance analysis provides deeper insights into implementation complexity trade-offs and the resulting gap to channel capacity.

Abstract

This book focuses on fractional calculus, presenting novel advances in both the theory and applications of non-integer order systems. At the end of the twentieth century it was predicted that it would be the calculus of the twenty-first century, and that prophecy is confirmed year after year. Now this mathematical tool is successfully used in a variety of research areas, like engineering (e.g. electrical, mechanical, chemical), dynamical systems modeling, analysis and synthesis (e.g technical, biological, economical) as well as in multidisciplinary areas (e.g. biochemistry, electrochemistry). As well as the mathematical foundations the book concentrates on the technical applications of continuous-time and discrete-time fractional calculus, investigating the identification, analysis and control of electrical circuits and dynamical systems. It also presents the latest results. Although some scientific centers and scientists are skeptical and actively criticize the applicability of fractional calculus, it is worth breaking through the scientific and technological walls. Because the “fractional community” is growing rapidly there is a pressing need for the exchange of scientific results. The book includes papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Non-integer Order Calculus and Its Applications and is divided into three parts: • Mathematical foundations • Fractional systems analysis and synthesis • System modeling Seven papers discuss the mathematical foundations, twelve papers address fractional order analysis and synthesis and three focus on dynamical system modeling by the fractional order differential and difference equations. It is a useful resource for fractional calculus scientific community.

Abstract

The focus of this book is on array processing and beamforming with Kronecker products. It considers a large family of sensor arrays that allow the steering vector to be decomposed as a Kronecker product of two steering vectors of smaller virtual arrays. Instead of directly designing a global beamformer for the original array, once the steering vector has been decomposed, smaller virtual beamformers are designed and separately optimized for each virtual array. This means the matrices that need to be inverted are smaller, which increases the robustness of the beamformers, and reduces the size of the observations. The book explains how to perform beamforming with Kronecker product filters using an unconventional approach. It shows how the Kronecker product formulation can be used to derive fixed, adaptive, and differential beamformers with remarkable flexibility. Furthermore, it demonstrates how fixed and adaptive beamformers can be intelligently combined, optimally exploiting the advantages of both. The problem of spatiotemporal signal enhancement is also addressed, and readers will learn how to perform Kronecker product filtering in this context.

Abstract

Drawing on 15 years of experience in the development and use of wearable sensors in sports science, this book bridges the gap between technical research and the widespread adoption of inertial sensors in biomechanical assessment and ambulatory studies of locomotion. It offers a 'no-nonsense' guide to using inertial sensors for readers from the sports science disciplines who may be unfamiliar with the terms, concepts and approaches that lead to these sensors’ successful use. At the same time, the book introduces readers with a technical background, e.g. in engineering, to sport science methodologies that can provide valuable insights into the use of sensors in a practical environment that extends well beyond bench testing. .

Abstract

This book presents novel research ideas and offers insights into radar system design, artificial intelligence and signal processing applications. Further, it proposes a new concept of antenna spatial polarization characteristics (SPC), suggesting that the antenna polarization is a function of the spatial direction and providing new ideas for radar signal processing (RSP) and anti-jamming. It also discusses the design of an advanced signal-processing algorithm, and proposes new polarimetric and anti-jamming methods using antenna inherent properties. The book helps readers discover the potential of radar information processing and improve its anti-interference and target identification ability. It is of interest to university researchers, radar engineers and graduate students in computer science and electronics who wish to learn the core principles, methods, algorithms, and applications of RSP. .

Abstract

This book gives readers in-depth know-how on methods of state estimation for nonlinear control systems. It starts with an introduction to dynamic control systems and system states and a brief description of the Kalman filter. In the following chapters, various state estimation techniques for nonlinear systems are discussed, including the extended, unscented and cubature Kalman filters, etc. The cubature Kalman filter and its variants are introduced in particular detail because of their efficiency and their ability to deal with systems with Gaussian and/or non-Gaussian noise. The book also discusses information-filter and square-root-filtering algorithms, useful for state estimation in some real-time control system design problems. A number of case studies are included in the book to illustrate the application of various nonlinear filtering algorithms. Nonlinear Filtering is written for academic and industrial researchers, engineers and research students who are interested in nonlinear control systems analysis and design. The chief features of the book include: dedicated coverage of recently developed nonlinear, Jacobian-free, filtering algorithms; examples illustrating the use of nonlinear filtering algorithms in real-world applications; detailed derivation and complete algorithms for nonlinear filtering methods help readers to a fundamental understanding and easier coding of those algorithms; and MATLAB® codes associated with case-study applications can be downloaded from the Springer Extra Materials website.
