Abstract

"To know what the future holds, know what the past is hiding. Jonathan Cahn, author of the New York Times best sellers The Harbinger, The Mystery of the Shemitah, The Book of Mysteries, and The Paradigm, now unveils The Oracle, in which he opens up the jubilean prophecies and a mystery so big that it has determined everything from the rise and fall of world empires to two world wars, the current events of our day, the future, end-time prophecy, and much more. Could an ancient prophecy and a mysterious ordinance given in a Middle Eastern desert over three thousand years ago be determining the events of our day? Could some of the most famous people of modern history and current events be secretly linked to this mystery-even a modern president of the United States? Could this ancient revelation pinpoint the events of our times down to the year, month, and day of their occurring? Could a mysterious phenomenon be manifesting on the world stage on an exact timetable determined from ancient times? Could these manifestations have altered-and now be altering-the course of world events? Jonathan Cahn takes the reader on a journey to find the man called 'the Oracle.' One by one each of the jubilean mysteries will be revealed through the giving of a vision. The Oracle will uncover The Mystery of the Stranger, The Lost City, The Man With the Measuring Line, The Birds, The Return, The Day of the Lions, and much, much more. The reader will discover the ancient scrolls that contain the appointed words that have determined the course of world history from the onset of modern times up to our day. Ultimately The Oracle will reveal the secret that lies behind end-time prophecy and the mystery of the end of the age. As with The Harbinger and The Book of Mysteries, Cahn reveals the mysteries through a narrative; a traveler is given seven keys, each for the opening of one of seven doors. Behind each door lies one of the seven streams of the jubilean mysteries. The reader will be taken on a journey, led by angelic guides, through each door and vision to uncover the ancient secrets that lie behind the world-changing events of modern times. As with Cahn's other works, the reader will find that the mysteries revealed within the pages of The Oracle are absolutely real, amazing, life-changing, and mind-blowing"--

Abstract

"The essays of this book deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, what were the links between the cultic and the prophetic personnel? Did prophets have ritual/cultic functions in temples? Did prophetic actions and/or utterances play a role in the performance of the cult? What were the ritual aspects of divinations? Second, how do literary texts describe the interaction between prophecy and cult? Third, how can various theories (e.g. religious theory, performance theory) enable us to reach a better understanding of the interplay between divination and cultic ritual in ancient Israel and the wider ancient Near East?"--back cover.

Abstract

The "Vade mecum in tribulatione", written in latin by french franciscan John of Rupescissa in the 1356, belongs to the most popular late medieval prophetic works. Testimony of this is the fact that it was translated very soon into many different vernacular languages. The present volume contains an edition and comparative analysis of sixteen tranlsations and adaptations into seven medieval vernaculars prepared by an international team of philologists. The joint editorial work represents the first enterprise of this type in medieval studies. The translations here edited comprise four in french, three in german, three in czech, three in castilian, and single ones in italian, english and catalan. The number of languages into which the "Vade mecum in tribulatione" was translated is very high even when compared with the most popular medieval religious educational bestsellers. Harsh critiscim of the church hierarchy, religious orders as well as secular lordship, concrete information on the arrival of Antichrist and of future plagues and catastrophes embedded in a set of religious admonitions were applicable in different times, different places and in different societies. The reception of Rupescissa's prophetic compendium in medieval Europe shows very clearly how differently texts were read and interpreted, even works with seemingly very urgent messages. The edition of the extant translations of "Vade mecum in tribulatione" provides an excellent basis for new approaches to late medieval religiosity.

Abstract

Prophesying Tragedy investigates the political and epistemological dimensions of the conflict between heroes and prophets in homer's Iliad and Sophocles' Theban plays, Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus. Rebecca Weld Bushnell asserts that an understanding of tragic fate, as represented in prophecy, can be achieved through an awareness of the historical relationship of tragedy to culture and politics, for the tragic hero's interpretation and defiance of prophecy both reflected and influenced the political abuse of oracles and omens.

Abstract

Prophecy was a wide-spread phenomenon in the ancient world - not only in ancient Israel but in the whole Eastern Mediterranean cultural sphere. This is demonstrated by documents from the ancient Near East, that have been the object of Martti Nissinen's research for more than twenty years. Nissinen's studies have had a formative influence on the study of the prophetic phenomenon. The present volume presents a selection of thirty-one essays, bringing together essential aspects of prophetic divination in the ancient Near East. The first section of the volume discusses prophecy from theoretical perspectives. The second sections contains studies on prophecy in texts from Mari and Assyria and other cuneiform sources. The third section discusses biblical prophecy in its ancient Near Eastern context, while the fourth section focuses on prophets and prophecy in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. Even prophecy in the Dead Sea Scrolls is discussed in the fifth section. The articles are essential reading for anyone studying ancient prophetic phenomenon.
