In Berlin, Fichte began holding a lecture called Facts of Consciousness as a preliminary to his Wissenschaftslehre. It served to illustrate knowledge as a whole: Fichte analyses the relations between the specific factual aspects of consciousness and how they constitute knowledge. By learning to focus not on objects but on its own actions and the laws governing those actions, consciousness establishes the concept of knowledge, the topic of the Wissenschaftslehre. In this sense, the too little received Facts of Consciousness serve as an introduction to the heart of Fichte's philosophy. - In this book, Ebersbach offers the first comprehensive interpretation of the Facts of Consciousness (1810/11). Fichte invites his students to a journey of consciousness - this book serves as a travel guide to this journey.

You pray it. But do you understand it? The Lord's Prayer has become so familiar to us that we don't think about what we're praying. It's a portrait of Jesus' heart. And in it Christians from different times, places, and traditions have been united. We pray it, but do we actually believe it? When Jesus taught his followers how to pray, he emphasized how uncomplicated it should be. There's no need for pretense or theatrics. Instead, simply ask for what you need as though you were speaking with your earthly father. This opens a window into Jesus' prayer life and presents us with a portrait of his heart for his followers. Wesley Hill re-introduces the Lord's Prayer. He shows us a God who is delighted to hear prayer. Petition by petition, in conversation with the Christian tradition, he draws out the significance of Jesus' words for prayer today. --

"Interest in the psychotherapeutic capacity of Buddhist teachings and practices has captured the popular imagination. News media regularly post stories about the neuropsychological study of Buddhist meditative states and applications of "mindfulness" practices in diverse settings including corporate business headquarters, the U.S. military, and university health services. However, Ira Helderman shows, for well over a century investigators, stretching back to James, Jung, and others fascinated by the psychology of religion, have studied the psychological dimensions of Buddhist doctrine. They have influenced the mental health field and shaped common understandings of "Buddhism" for many Americans. Prescribing the Dharma is the first book to focus on psychotherapists themselves. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and in-depth interviews with many clinicians who have been formative in the use of Buddhist ideas and concepts, Helderman looks at how the key categories of 'religion' and 'secularism' operate for such caregivers"--

Since it erupted onto the world stage in 2009, people have asked, what is Boko Haram, and what does it stand for? Is there a coherent vision or set of beliefs behind it? Despite the growing literature about the group, few if any attempts have been made to answer these questions, even though Boko Haram is but the latest in a long line of millenarian Muslim reform groups to emerge in Northern Nigeria over the last two centuries. 'The Boko Haram Reader' offers an unprecedented collection of essential texts, documents, videos, audio, and nashids (martial hymns), translated into English from Hausa, Arabic and Kanuri, tracing the group's origins, history, and evolution.

The dietary prohibitions in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 represent one of the most detailed textual overlaps in the Pentateuch between the Priestly material and Deuteronomy. This is especially the case for the birds: their identities are shrouded in mystery and the reasons for their prohibition debated. Peter Altmann attempts to break this impasse by setting these flyers within the broader context of birds and flying creatures in the Ancient Near East. His investigation considers the zooarcheological data on birds in the ancient Levant, iconographic and textual material on mundane and mythic flyers from Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as studying the symbolic functions of birds within the texts of the Hebrew Bible itself.

Many Americans assume that the Catholic Church is inherently conservative, based on its stances on abortion, contraception, and divorce. Yet there is a longstanding tradition of progressive Catholic movements in the United States that have addressed a variety of issues from labor, war, immigration, and environmental protection, to human rights, women's rights, exploitive development practices, and bellicose foreign policies. These Catholic social movements have helped to shift the Church from an institution that had historically supported incumbent governments and political elites to a Church that has increasingly sided with the vulnerable and oppressed. This book provides a concise history of progressively oriented Catholic Social Thought, which conveys the Catholic Church's position on a variety of social justice concerns. Sharon Erickson Nepstad introduces key papal encyclicals and other church documents, showing how lay Catholics in the United States have put these ideas into practice through a creative and sometimes provocative political engagement. Nepstad also explores how these progressive movements have pressured the religious hierarchy to respond to pressing social issues, such as women's ordination, conscription, and the morality of nuclear deterrence policies. 'Catholic Social Activism' vividly depicts how these progressive movements have helped to shape the religious landscape of the United States, and how they have provoked controversy and debate among Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
