Recent research has led to a new appraisal of Valentinianism as a distinct form of early Christianity that deserves to be understood in its own right. This publication offers a historical, literary, and theological study of the treatise 'Aduersus Manichaeos', attributed to Evodius of Uzalis. Evodius was a friend and contemporary of Augustine of Hippo. His anti-Manichaean treatise 'Aduersus Manichaeos' constitutes an important source on both the Christian church as well as the Manichaean movement in the Latin world in the fifth century. Nevertheless, because the treatise bears witness to the influence of the anti-Manichaean writings of Augustine of Hippo, it has not yet been systematically studied on its own. As a result, much of its historical circumstances have been shrouded in mystery.0This volume is the result of the doctoral research of Aäron Vanspauwen (KU Leuven). The volume reconstructs the circumstances in which 'Aduersus Manichaeos' was written, and studies the treatise in relation to its fifth-century North African context. This publication complements the study of 'Aduersus Manichaeos' with a new critical edition of the original Latin text of the treatise, including a facing English translation.

L’importance et l’originalité de cette monographie résident dans l’analyse d’un document manichéen de première main, Sur la naissance de son corps (Codex manichéen de Cologne), qui raconte, en adoptant le registre du merveilleux, l’enfance et l’adolescence de Mani (216/7-276/7) dans une communauté baptiste de la basse Mésopotamie. Il est question ici de la partie centrale de ce texte (79, 13-107, 23), conservé dans un codex grec « de poche », datant probablement du IVe siècle : les exposés, mis sous l’autorité de trois traditionnistes manichéens (Baraïes, Zachéas et Timothée), des divergences et des conflits entre les responsables de la communauté et le jeune Mani, qui ont abouti à la tenue d’un synode où a été décidée sa mise au ban. Abandonnant ce groupe, Mani débute la diffusion de sa nouvelle « religion ». Cet ouvrage ajoute une pièce importante et novatrice à l’étude de l’elkasaïsme, du manichéisme et du mandéisme, mettant en lumière des connections et des relations entre ces mouvements. Il montre que l’origine elkasaïte et donc judéenne de Mani est fondée.

"Mani and Augustine: collected essays on Mani, Manichaeism and Augustine gathers in one volume contributions on Manichaean scholarship made by the internationally renowned scholar Johannes van Oort. The first part of the book focuses on the Babylonian prophet Mani (216-277) who styled himself an 'apostle of Jesus Christ', on Jewish elements in Manichaeism and on 'human semen eucharist', eschatology and imagery of Christ as 'God's Right Hand'. The second part of the book concentrates on the question to what extent the former 'auditor' Augustine became acquainted with Mani's gnostic world religion and his canonical writings, and explores to what extent Manichaeism had a lasting impact on the most influential church father of the West".
