In 'Bastions zonder grenzen' reconstrueren de auteurs de geschiedenis van het militaire erfgoed van Damme, Sluis en IJzendijke. Al tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog (1568-1648) bleek dat de oude middeleeuwse burchtmuren niet langer volstonden om zich te beschermen tegen buskruit en vuurwapens. Steden werden versterkt met veelhoekige bastions, forten, schansen, batterijen en linies. 0'Bastions zonder grenzen' richt de schijnwerpers op dit militair erfgoed. Hoe bouwde men zo?n versterking? Welke nieuwe militaire ontwikkelingen en gewijzigde inzichten in strategie en tactiek ontwikkelden zich? De vele plannen, tekeningen, gravures en schilderijen tonen het meesterschap van de militaire bouwheren. Maar vandaag staan we voor de vraag: hoe gaan we om met militair erfgoed? Comment faire pour que la viande que nous consommons ne soit pas un facteur de déforestation en Amazonie ? Que les travailleurs qui confectionnent nos habits ou extraient les métaux rares présents dans nos téléphones ne risquent pas leur vie pour un salaire de misère ? Quelles leçons tirer de la crise économique déclenchée par la pandémie de Covid-19 ? Une partie de la réponse se trouve dans les règles commerciales qui structurent les activités économiques internationales. Car le constat est là : non seulement le Lilibre-échange n'a pas tenu la promesse de prospérité planétaire avancée par ses défenseurs, mais il accélère la destruction de nos écosystèmes, renforce les inégalités, fait fi de nombreuses violations des droits humains et dépossède les États de leur capacité d'agir. Les auteurs se livrent à une critique rigoureuse et chiffrée des accords de commerce, dont les plus récents (Tafta, Ceta, accord avec le Mercosur...) ont suscité de vives oppositions citoyennes. Mais la critique ne suffit pas. Car le choix du libre-échange a été permanent au cours des dernières décennies, de la part de dirigeants prompts à décrédibiliser toute proposition alternative. Il est pourtant possible de remettre le commerce au service de la société et de la transition écologique et sociale. Avec de multiples propositions concrètes et ambitieuses, les auteurs invitent à inventer enfin un juste-échange réellement durable.

"How did the evolution of new gunpowder weapons change the nature, structure and composition of the Florentine militias during the first decades of the sixteenth century? Via an examination of little-known and unpublished sources, this book provides a comparative exploration of two Florentine republican experiments with a peasant militia: one promoted and created by Niccolò Machiavelli (1506-12) and a later one (1527-30). Using this comparison as the basis for a new reading of Machiavelli's Art of War (which drew on the author's experience with the militia), the book then investigates the relationship between the circulation and reception of Machiavelli's influential work, changing conceptions of militia, and the formation of new cultures of warfare in Europe in the sixteenth century."--
